WOULD A DRINK HELP?
By going back in our own drinking histories, we could show that years before we realized it we were out of control, that our drinking even then was no mere habit, that it was indeed the beginning of a fatal progression.

I generally just like having a club soda with lime in hand instead. I find that works just as well.
Haven’t had a drink in 15 years. I typically drink NA beer when at a bar or in a few other social situations. If I averaged it out - less than 10 per year. After 1-2 I feel full and rarely have more. I’ve never had a desire to keep drinking them. I am an active AA member and I don’t mention it unless asked. It’s likely different for some and 100% not worth any risk.

My thoughts:
- 👎🏻 Non-alcoholic beers are for non-alcoholics
- 👍 Mocktails are fine, though it pays to double check if they’re truly alcohol free before drinking it if someone else made it for you.
The above thoughts are my rules though. It’s most important to trust what your gut is telling you. I’ve heard of folks who are fine with the NA beers, but I know for me, if I had one NA beer I’d still be tempted to drink a case of it, and from there it’d be a very slippery slope.
I hear ya. The NA beers are good enough now that they taste so similar. Mocktails on the other hand are like complex juices. No real approximation. As the NA spirits improve though that might change.
That’s interesting about Kombucha and stuff I’ve never considered that since things like bananas and hamburger buns have more actual alcohol content in them than Kombucha (or NA beers for that matter). Whatever might create a trigger though right?
Appreciate you sharing. Trying to figure out lines for myself. Not doing AA… just pushing this change on my own.
Six and half years sober. I like mocktails but I’ve never had an NA beer…I’m just worried the taste will make me want a real one.
You got that right. I don’t need the stress of that.
I’m 4 months sober. I usually only do NA beer if I’m craving and it’s been a good thing for me. I just like the taste of beer.
Never had a mock tail.
Normally at happy hours I just drink coke and no one knows there’s no whiskey..
Just have to be very careful with mocktails to be sure they’re not the real thing. Ordered one recently at a high end restaurant that has a specialty mocktail section on its drinks menu and *still* got a version with vodka in it! Could smell it before I sipped any, but it was a close call!
That’s so nuts and scary. Great catch!
Haven’t had a drink in a year and a week. I’ve never had either, i just don’t have an interest. My thoughts/what I’ve heard is just to make sure you’re not romanticizing it. I guess that’s partly why I don’t. Whether in social situations or solo, i was told to really have clarity around why I’d really want a drink like that … is it really truly just for the taste? Social situations with co workers is a bit trickier for sure on this one though.
I was always told that non alcoholic beers are for no alcoholics. It’s still triggering that same habit and emotion.
I started with finding a soda I enjoy and avoiding bars at all costs my early years of sobriety.
This is the way. I didn’t set foot in a bar for a couple of years.
Been sober 1.8 year and I’m the beginning I was way into na beer as a copping mechanism. Could’ve def gone bad, but luckily I didn’t slip. Not I just have them casually maybe once a month or less at a get together. If you’re not in a good headspace maybe avoid the trigger risk, but ultimately just be honest with yourself. I love a good mocktail! Usually it just taste like a fun juice and it’s nice to order something unusual for me
^my only issue with mocktail tbh is that they’re priced as much as an alcoholic drink! Bs
Interestingg okay good to know!
