How does everyone go about pricing? Project rates? Hourly rates? It’s hard to find that sweet spot between pricing yourself out and selling yourself short. Sr. copywriter/ACD in a midsize market.

Figure out a rough estimate, then add another hour or two. This way, when you come in under budget, they’ll love you. (I’m a big believer in underpromising and over delivering)

like

It is low. I usually shoot for $140 or so but end up at $125. It’s fine. Also, I use a Sr CW title so agencies don’t think I’m too expensive. Plus, when OT kicks in, it makes up for it. And I usually get extended. Where are you located?

like

Hourly. I always get screwed when I do by project. (I’m the same level as you)

like

Right, but I find that even when it’s hourly, the client usually wants a rough estimate of the total cost before awarding me the job.

Very good advice. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.

ACD OP: I live in Rochester. I’m guessing you’re in Rochester or Buffalo? Either way, I’d say $100-$125/hr is right for billing. That’s probably lower than the rate an agency would bill an ACD at. If there’s enough work to fill up several weeks $75/hr would make sense.

like

What’s a fair hourly rate? I’m 11 years in and a pretty familiar name around town having worked at a couple of the bigger agencies. I’ve been charging $75/hour but I’m feeling like that may be a little low.

Upstate NY in one of the healthier advertising markets. So, just as an experiment, one client needed four :30 radio scripts that were fairly straightforward and based on existing ads. What would you have charged for that?

Hourly.

I work out project prices based on timeline and deliverables. I pad my time estimates a bit to make up for the inevitable scope creep. Clients want to know what the project is going to cost them, giving a project price makes it easy for them to say yes. Sometimes I get screwed on rate, but often I complete the work faster than expected but still get the agreed upon fee. Nobody actually checks my hours.

But it is a LOT more responsibility and I can’t help but feel insane imposter syndrome. They are putting a lot of faith in me for this role and it’s a brand new position internally so there is a lot of pressure to do well. I’ve been through 5+ weeks of interviews with a company that will IPO next year and they did a bait and switch on me with the offer: it was advertised as “Head of” and then during the offer-walk-through-meeting today they said “oh btw we changed the title to ‘Senior Manager’ for this role”. They offered me a salary I made 4 years ago as a manager. They offered stock options with an exercise price TBD 1 year from now…which is when they’re hitting IPO. Is that normal for stock options?
