How does hierarchy work in banks vs fintechs such as Capital one?
E.g. Everyone is a VP at my client (Wells Fargo) whereas I hear VP is a big deal at PayPal / Capital One.

Capital One is not a fintech. It is a bank.

But they have those great commercials where that guy knocks down the marble columns of a stodgy bank branch, and reveals … a bank branch that doesn’t have marble columns. Obviously a tech company, not a bank!

Capital one is not a fintech, it’s a bank. On the other hand as an example, Visa or PayPal are fintech. Trust me, I’ve worked at both.

Everyone is a VP at a bank. Then you have SVP and EVP

All that matters is MVP

At Cap One: manager, director, senior director, VP.

VP is a big deal. Manager is comparable to big four manager.

like

I forgot senior manager. And I dunno about fintechs.

At traditional bulge bracket or middle market banks, VP is like Manager in consulting.

From their FAQ:

Associates can experience career growth through the following progression levels: Coordinator, Senior Coordinator, Principal Coordinator, Associate, Senior Associate, Principal Associate, Manager, Senior Manager, Director, Senior Director, Vice President, Managing Vice President, Senior Vice President, Executive Vice President.

Capital One’s structure is more akin to a fintech than a traditional bank. VPs at C1 are very senior whereas VPs at traditional banks are Manager level.

It’s a bank that is starting to focus more on technology, as most banks have been over last several years. I am sure they are doing some innovative things on the technology side, but I’d suggest that’s a very small portfolio of their business and wouldn’t really consider them FinTech.

What’s the question you’re trying to answer? Trying to compare roles, want to work at a bank or FinTech, etc?

Yeah looking to compare in terms of level and hierarchy what I should be aiming for one way or the other. Say I go to a typical bank, should I be aiming for a VP level? And will that be true for say Cap1 or PayPal as well

How does one gain clarity about what to do with their career? I’m a tax manager, love client relations, business development, training/managing staff, recruiting, etc., but feel like the amount of technical work I have to do yet makes it hard to be successful in the areas I enjoy. I’m also finding that busy season doesn’t necessarily mesh with my ‘wants’ in life anymore as I’m a big skier, like going on spring break, etc. Any advice?

General question: How much does someone at a smallish bank C-suite make in salary?

Currently looking for a house with my significant other budget of 1.6. I've lived in a city for a while and have gotten accustomed to the more modern set up. After relocating from DC to Chicago.

The problem I'm having is the particular area I am looking in for my budget has a lot of outdated homes with honey oak cabinets. Why was this ever popular?

I'm from the Bethesda in the homes we had just typically used whites / greys. Parents think I should raise my budget.

Ideas?
