Not really sure about the best communication strategy or if you’re just venting - it’s frustrating when people don’t understand what you’re doing but still think they know how long it should take
I think you can point out that it’s harder to read excel functions (or code) and understand what it’s supposed to be doing than it is to write it the first time. Whoever made it understood what they wanted and now you need to reverse engineer the logic
Also, you could point out that you’re addressing a problem they didn’t deal with the first time since excel didn’t scale to the data you needed - if it really worked the first time they could leave it in excel
Just to check my understanding, someone gave you an excel model and would like you to replicate it in python or something?
Correct
Tell them that the befenits of coding it vs developing in Excel is to reduce time to modify and to test correctness. But to set that up requires time and effort.
Also is this BCG Gamma? Just curious because why would you need to convert excel models to code?
Not really a Gamma project, just helping out as beach resource. Conversion because some of the matrix operations are getting too big for Excel.
Lol the way that someone describes it sounds like it would take forever to run and be a huge memory sink.
