Your salary pays for your experience and value to the work, not how much is your rent/mortgage. How much your life costs is up to you. You can spend more in Orlando than in NYC if you want.

Depends on the company, but you should also consider taxes too. For instance states that are classified “convenience of the employee” means you’re taxed based on where you live, not where the company is based. NYC is not one of those states so even if you moved to Florida which has no state income tax, you’d still be paying NY state taxes and NYC city taxes.
This is actually not true. I work for a NYC-based company and am coded as a FL resident. I do not pay city or state taxes.
Entirely dependent on the company’s policies. I have friends who work in tech who had their salaries slashed when they moved to rural states, and others who still make bank while living outside of major cities.
I think that travel will likely become a factor. Once we’re fully opened, will you have to go in person to your clients again? Where are they located? If they’re in NY and the agency has to pay to fly you back to NY consistently, you’re not going to be keeping that NY salary.
Clients can change a lot though in our business and a lot of folks in NY have no clients who are based in NY and they themselves like to fly in for meetings or around events/activations/etc a few times a year. So now maybe more agency people might do the same. Or not. I mean, weren’t there too many agency people in those big client NYC meetings anyway? Maybe smaller meetings will be a trend. And better.

Some agencies have stated they will let you keep your current salary with a move but your new location will be considered for future raises - meaning if you’d go from NYC to Omaha you might not be eligible for a raise for years.
Coach
Edelman sets salary bands based on geography, so it’s likely to be tied to your home office. However, things may evolve to shift based on your city’s COL - might be a little too early to say.
At my company (not Edelman) we don’t cut pay when you move to a less expensive market, but when you are up for your next salary review, location is a factor. We have three tiers of geographies and the swing between lowest to highest isn’t that significant.
