It’s kind of like that news channel fight scene from Anchorman
Works pretty well if you have a network of people who like working with you.
As I once heard a senior MDP (“Partner”) say: if staffing staffs you, then you’re doing something wrong
It largely differs by office / region. You have some regions where you basically should be staffing yourself and you have others where it’s essentially all run through the staffing team (that’s the case in the office I’m in now). When I was at McK, it was much more self-staffing, and that seemed to be more consistent throughout the different offices
I’m based in Brazil and everything is run by Staffing, who will talk to CD advisors and decide on cases to staff you
@bcg1 lol, I’ve heard that for multiple firms I’ve worked with, but obviously it is very situational. In some cases, you get reached out by staffing managers if 1) you are not in demand and no one is asking for you 2) no one else wants to work for whoever is on that case, therefore they are desperate 3) the individual on the case doesn’t have a strong enough network (and most likely new to BCG with no demonstrated value of what they can provide the firm or you in this instance). With any of these reasons, its a bad place to be in.
So we are clear. There is some tolerance / forgiveness here. Like if you call the client stupid. That’s against BCG values
I think this is being overplayed. If you have strong leadership pull AND you want to be there, then typically staffing team is less relevant. If you don’t want to be there staffing can help manage by protecting you or finding you other opportunities. Naturally as time goes on, you should hopefully find the right areas for you and then not need to rely on staffing.
How does this compare to Bain or McK?
McK is closer to BCG than Bain. In your first year, it’s ok for PD to staff you, but you can also staff yourself via networking. I’ve been staffing myself since I joined (9 months ago) but have been pulling in PD when I need help deciding or pushing the process along. Staffing yourself gives you more control... or at least the illusion of choice.
