How easy/hard is it to transfer internally at pwc and how do you do it? Specifically move out of risk assurance and into advisory. I've heard that it's hard due to political reasons?

I agree with PwC1, who had a great response. The politics come in because they don't have incentive to let you transfer; after all, you're leaving them. It will come down to the other group pushing your current group for you. Timing is a big deal. You might only be free March-April for a rotation but the new group isn't busy. Tough luck, you'll be told to wait until they're busy. But wait, you're on busy season clients from May-November; is your current group going to let you rotate while you're a key piece to those engagements, or are you forced to wait until December? Will the new group even take rotations in December? These are the obstacles you'll face.

You'll want to be a high performer so people in your current group will be willing to help you out. Realistically, a rotation/transfer won't happen until you make senior (often a requirement). If you're serious about a certain advisory group, then do your research, network with those people, and make a serious push for it as you get close to senior. Also, getting an offer from another firm is a way to skip all of the timing/politics issues above, so be open to that option.

EY2 you're right, I'd also rather change firms. However, it's difficult with risk assurance because the work experience isn't really valued. If I go for EY consulting/m&a, they have no reason to take me. In that case, it's easier to do internal transfer because you've built a network and people can vouch that you do good work.

Political yes. More often its business reasons. You are sometimes staffed for months at a time, and chances are you have to finish what you are staffed on before transferring. Also, it depends when I’m your career you want to transfer. When you get hired by a service line they make an investment in you, they expect to make it in some form and that usually takes time. And ultimately it can take time because depending on the service line you have to show a track record of high performance.

Try to apply externally since you’re an intern and land a advisory offer. FYI EY risk advisory is risk assurance so be careful. I’m in it lol so your best bet is to interview for other groups.

Haha yeah it’s somehow consulting. For the time being let’s just keep our jobs.

Idk how, but I got the offer. Still wondering if it’s real (it’s been 30mins since the phone call) because I thought I performed so poorly. I wouldn’t have passed myself. I hope the interviewers didn’t make a mistake (accidentally mixed up evals for another candidate, or the call was meant for another candidate w/ the same name). I do want to thank the Fishbowl community though. So many of you took the time to share your experiences and encourage me. I couldn’t have done this without you.

I would say I am still learning everything because its been 10 months since I started working. Anyone leave after a year and where did you transfer to? I am thinking of switching firms because I do think big4 teaches you great skills, but my busy season being 6 months and another bc planning not ok.
