They may mean it at the moment but economics change and there are no guarantees
I don't think partners say this lightly

They mean it until someone replaces you

The partner almost assuredly really means it. We have associates come back after leaving pretty often at my V30. Just bear in mind that circumstances change for them / the firm, too, and life goes on. The longer you are gone, the more likely that open door closes or would open up to a different universe at the firm (other people hired to do your job, the partner left, others moved in on your specialty, a new senior was hired who would block your path to partnership, etc.).

They usually mean it, but use your judgement. I just went back to my old firm. Did you get more requests to take on work than you had time for? Did partners come back to you repeatedly to ha d’le their matters? Did you get along personally with the people in your group? Did you ever piss anyone off at the firm?

Sounds like you’re good as long as the group has a need. Just keep in touch with the people you like and send them a happy holiday or something occasionally.
In my case, it’s been repeated multiple times by different partners in the year since I left.
The specific comment from one (powerful) partner was “Let me know when you’re ready to come back, in any office.” (I moved to a different province).
Wondered this myself after being told this.
