How good is KPMG in management consulting vs Accenture and other Big-4s? How does the Principal level compare to Accenture’s MDs?

Checking in about growing rumor mentions of coming MD layoffs. Anyone have reliable intel or even corroborating chatter to share? Any specifics on timing, MU, talent segment?

Management Consulting is very wide concept. Which did you have in mind? In general, KPMG is in the back of the bus across the board, in particular for strategy consulting.

“Back of the bus”… shots fired

Said by a partner who knows nothing about their offerings.

To answer your question, OP, Principal is non-cpa equity partner, so not directly comparable outside of the notion it’s the top level title-wise. There are levels within Principals of course ( they segment by bands) but it’s not an official title.

As said, Management Consulting encompasses a lot of practices. How they compare depends on what you do. Some areas they don’t play at all. Some areas they’re great. If you’re a Financial Services person, you’ll be busy and challenged broadly. Don’t know as much about the other industries.

What are you looking at?

A friend is leading a COE in manufacturing and ops, which is an emerging offering in their Strategy group. Sounds new-ish.

They don’t do this work in MC. As previously said, more supply chain focused. And planning within supply chain.

Frankly, you’re asking the wrong question. We have talent across all of MC. The issue is the difference between our LPs (lead partners) and Accenture’s CALs. Our LPs are mostly long time tax and audit partners. Just don’t hold a candle against Accentures secret sauce which has always been their client account leads.

What exactly do you mean by Accenture secret sauce

Generally speaking, Principal is going to be equivalent to Accenture L3/L2/L1 MDs/SMD in terms of comp, span of control, responsibility - wide range

For “Ops” domain, advantage goes to accenture with exceptions in some specific subdomains or sectors

Is there a general expectation that a Partner has an MBA?

I doubt it's required at most firms but I'm a pretty senior staff and when I speak with Partners, they seem to speak with an MBA level of business knowledge which extends past their technical skillset.

I realize that's what makes them good Partners but it makes me wonder if I realistically need to get an MBA to keep growing and hit Partner.

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.

I'm in late stages of switching from a very small and specialized boutique to one of the larger T2s. Was told that final step will be a presentation of my case to a hiring committee. The process at my current firm is very different and I never had to do this when I got promoted nor do we ask this of incoming partners.
