How good is the biglaw lateral market right now for junior associates? Especially if looking to switch practice groups? I’m at a V100/Am100 firm in NYC.

Any insight? Please??

Seems to me like it’s very hot. I think switching practice areas depends on how closely related/transferable the work is and how senior you are. You might take a hit on seniority if too dissimilar.

I agree with you on seniority and dissimilarity in areas - which is why I’m thinking it would be better to switch sooner than later. Would you say that switching from one transactional group to another would be closely related/transferable, even if no prior experience in the area you are trying to switch into?

What would you do if a partner from your previous firm (you left recently like a week or two ago) contacts you wanting to discuss a client matter that they say is urgent? I've only been in biglaw for a year, but have been practicing for seven years so far. I used to be a state regulator for this practice area and generally enjoy working at a private firm. A partner at a boutique firm that I'm friends with has called me every few months to check-in and see how I'm doing. During our last call he essentially offered a job after I get another year of experience in private practice. Five year track to partnership. No billable hours.

How many billable hours do you aim for per month? Thinking of lateraling to a firm with no official hours target and wondering what I should be aiming for - is 170/mo (2000 per year) acceptable?
