How hard is it to get fired or put on PIP in Big 4 or public accounting in general? Aside from covid related departures.

I want to be fired from PwC. For severance.

likefunnysmarthelpful

Non COVID related firing will not have severance.

At EY you don’t need to get put on a PIP to be fired.

like

I should put you on PIP for even asking...but yes it’s pretty easy to get fired/PIP’d

likefunny

Easy yes. But it takes time if you fake it a little.

like

The performance requirements are already high to simply just meet the minimum expectations. The mentality we have is that our job is always on the line.

like

I’ve always heard the opposite from what people are saying. My understanding is that you gotta be pretty bad to be fired. Big 4 is almost always understaffed so they need bodies.

like

Historically, this has been accurate.

like

Can you give us some context? Are you an incoming staff🤣

like

I think it’s impossible to get fired but then again, we pay so low nobody wants our jobs.

The bottom 10% of performers is laid off each year. So odds are you won't have problems as long as you can deliver but there will be times like Covid where even if you deliver, compared to your peers you might still be in the bottom 10% and get put on a PIP as an excuse to cut you.

like

There’s no way it’s that high in public accounting. We have enough attrition through people leaving for industry or other PA firms.

like

Historically, very hard to get put on a PIP at all levels. Very different story when economy turns.

Before COVID, EY used to hold on to the lowest of the low performers because we just needed bodies. Low performers got to stay on teams while others had to pick up their slack. I tried to roll a senior off my team because the staff were having to take over his unfinished work. The schedulers said no, and guess who was separated in September. It’s a sad day when anyone is separated, but not everyone who was cut recently had an unfair shake.

like

Layoffs with severance are usually limited to major market events, like COVID or the financial crisis, possibly elimination of a segment of a service line or practice. Most other involuntary teinations are due to performance, and it is very difficult to terminate an employee for performance. Every company out there knows it. Do you really want that on your resume?

likesmart

@s1 this is actually the case in my group for seniors/associates. we almost always have a shortage of managers and above so this practice doesn’t really apply for the upper levels.

I don't think it happens often during normal times. As long as you are doing average to above average work, then the firms will be happy to have you working for them.

Morale at my firm & group is at an all-time low (no COVID bonuses, departures en masse etc). Partners asked seniors directly to do something on Friday and they collectively (I think) decided they would not work on the weekend and passed it on to me - at least 4 seniors called me independently to check if I was “available” to deliver it to the partner on Sunday (yeah of course...), so it was very obvious that all 5 of them decided they would just ruin my weekend instead.

I am in two minds because it's an Analyst role with no customer facing. Will that still add value to my career ? Also please advice on career path for Analyst
