I work for a partner who did this. I think it depends on the firm’s criteria for making partner. The firm I’m at now is purely based on years out of law school with no regard for book of business. So, when he lateraled as a 7/8 year associate, they made him partner right away. Not sure if it made any difference in his compensation or anything.
I just finished working on a deal in Texas with this same fact pattern. The key is portable book of business. I'm happy to chat more if you want to DM me.
I’ve helped multiple associates make this switch. Portable business is not always required. Really depends on the practice area, firm, etc.
Hm if you figure it out let me know please
Under what scenarios, if any, would an associate be able to pull this off without a portable book of business, particularly in litigation where a portable book of business is generally not as easy to come by even at the junior partner level?
You see this most often with a senior associate who maybe doesn't have partnership potential at their current firm and there is a firm who has clients they need to hand to a "partner" to make them the primary contact. I have made a few moves like this for associates, with no portable business. It's not impossible, and if you have the resume and the charisma to back you up, and if you have an honest conversation about what you are looking for walking in the door, it can be done. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk more specifically.
