Try to land an internal APM role , spend a year or two before landing a position outside.
Look up PM skills and try to get experiences as close to that as you can. The switch at that point should be tooo difficult
It’s doable but its less a matter of skills and ability and more of getting someone to give you a chance. There are so many people trying to into PM so need to be strategic about it.
Create a matrix of all the core skills of PM and then see how you stack up across those skills and work on getting experiences in those areas.
Another big chunk of it is learning the different frameworks and processes to product (prioritization, design thinking, lean, agile, experimentation) so you can at least talk the talk and be aware of approaches when you actually get the gig.
You may already be doing some of those things, so if you can go back and revisit your past experience under the lens of product, you may be able to craft some stories to say you’ve been doing product type things already or tell the story of how you would do it now.
TPjM -> TPM -> PM
+1. Certification is useless. Develop the technical architecture skills to make a large impact on execution as a TPM. Then leverage your deep knowledge on the product and customer to pivot to PM
Have you been a tech PM on products? Would think a lot of companies would be interested if you have good soft skills as well.
