Made me more cynical.
Coming out of the military and into commercial consulting, the “looking out for #1” mentality of many leaders in my firm and at the client has been a bit of a shock.
Not to say that there weren’t crummy leaders in the military (there are plenty), but the culture is very team first and there are a lot of great leaders there who genuinely care for their people. I about fell out of my chair the first time I heard a senior leader on my project blame their own subordinate for a failure in front of the client.
Maybe your unit was better than mine, but I never noticed such “I’m just covering my own ass” mentalities
MORE:
Efficient, productive, savvy to workplace politics, qualified, skilled, able to manage a team, overworked, stressed, wealthy, happy.
LESS:
Relaxed, free time, comfortable with my age vs career progress so far, able to converse about a wide variety of things because I don’t have time for other interests, sure about where I want to go in my career.
Overall net positive but possibly reaching the top of the curve in terms of benefits. I can see myself exiting to industry in a place of significant strength compared to when I came in.
It’s made me less physically and emotionally healthy
Facts
I’m really good at packing now
LOL same
My ego has increased exponentially
I’ve gotten slightly boring and don’t understand friends that make social plans without concrete dates and times. Also, I don’t really have the energy for concerts, loud noise, or crowds
Are you me?
I've learned not to give a f*** in most situations and not to take others' behaviors personally.
What kind of situations are you talking about?
As a former miser, I’m willing to pay more in my personal life to save time. 🤷🏼♂️
More stress, enjoying life less
I drink way more than I ever did

Yes and for the better. Had I not gone into it, I'd probably still be in the hospitality business working with my family, or barefoot and pregnant.
That’s me! Also, I know my scotch now
I’ve become ridiculously intolerant for people that board planes inefficiently
I totally agree A9. Boils my blood at times
My tolerance for bullshit has decreased dramatically.
He said decrease in tolerance not level. Decreasing tolerance, increasing bullshit. Lol.
I’ve learned to say “I’ll get back to you on that” and be more confident about it 🤷🏽♂️
I find myself infusing consulting jargon into my everyday conversations now - i.e. “no mom, I don’t have the bandwidth to take out the trash...” 😂
Ma! The meatloaf!
I’ve become a charlatan
And i know airports a lot better now
Yah. I learned there is no correlation between intelligence/effort and pay.
My soul is dead
