More details pls: did you name your price first? Or was it them? Tone of the call and interview? How soon after the interview? Good company and you WANT them? Is it a lowball offer or decent enough? Do you have other options?
Your cards. Show me your cards.
from reading your cards -- it honestly (and respectfully) sounds like you don't want this job. even if you boost your salary you could be unhappy in 2 mos. the bitter irony is money alone doesn't make you happy. if this offer were to go away completely and the other firms that you want more or will pay more, how would you feel?...your answer may be in there.
Hmm. Everything fell into place. You meet their needs, even exceed it. You feel it is safe, they know you can do it.... it's not a stretch position, you probably will learn little from it (don't tell them about the learning part).
Do this:
1. I'm confident I can do it, this isn't a stretch position for me.
2. I'm excited to join, but when I do join, I want to be dedicated to your business - to always think about what I can do better for you. I do not want to be thinking if I could attain a better offer elsewhere.... and join the bandwagon of job hoppers.
3. I feel an amount that will tip the scales for me and make me feel fully satisfied is : $$
What say you?
That’s solid and I particularly like point #2, I wouldn’t have thought to say it like that - thank you!!!
I’ll keep you posted on how it goes 🤞🏼
Yes! Exactly the kind of response I expected from someone who asked this question. Follow-up. Always.
I've tried many scripts, but this one worked for me. Other methods I've tried is just to name my super high price (because I was happy where i am)... and magically they accepted.
Asked for more time, recruiter was super displeased and pushy and even said (unprompted) that this is an extremely competitive offer and above budget - given this and my lack of interest I think I’ll end up using it to leverage with agencies and companies I want to work for and try to delay a decision as long as possible - but the recruiters tone and actions are definitely a red flag... idk how to even bring up comp at this point if even asking for a few days is received poorly.
In an effort to further delay (wanted to keep the offer as a backup as others come in) I asked to speak to the hiring manager again. They called within 2 minutes and we had a long conversation clarifying the role which was really helpful - convo got real and he asked what my hesitations were and went through them. It actually helped and I would have considered it but they forced me to give an answer then and there so I passed... honestly glad I did. It was not the place for me at all. Here’s to waiting for the other offers to roll in now that I’ve told the other companies I have one 😬🤞🏼🎉
