Please wait until you get an actual job offer... at my last agency, I felt like I “owed” them after I was approached by the client and it was a nightmare. I eventually got the job offer and left, but instead of 3 weeks of awkward before I left, it was 2 months of awkward. At the end of the day, once you get the job offer then you are about to be the client, so if they want to keep the client, they will be much more agreeable than if they know before the job offer. BTW, congrats!

like

That’s what I’m trying to avoid. They did it with a colleague of mine - the client went through our agency to offer him role, he said no thanks, they took him off the business and it was hella awkward for a while.

But I guess the awkward will be inevitable. I’m just trying to separate my feelings for how I think people will react vs. what reality is: I am ultimately still replaceable, so as long as I am actively trying to set the team up for success now/when I eventually leave I should be ok.

Congrats on building a great relationship with the client and making yourself essential to the business. One thing worth considering: does Weber’s MSA with the client have a mutual “do not hire” clause? Guessing you don’t, but wanted to raise because I am a caring little 🐟 . I had this happen with one of my team members on an acct I was running at one of the holding co’s, and it was a major escalation. The person got blocked from the job and things got awkward. Most companies would be happy to have a friendly face but eyes wide open. Good luck with the offer and discussions. Hope you get everything you deserve.

like

People use the "do not hire" cause when it's convenient or beneficial to them. I think OP is fine here, especially if OP has a relatively good relationship with the team.

You don’t owe anyone anything. Ever.

likehelpful

You moving over would be good for them because they will have an ally on the other side which could tremendously help with planning and executing. Anyone who would be upset just doesn't want to see others happy.

Remember you don't owe anyone anything. Progress for yourself not others when it comes to your career.

like

Get the offer if you’re really interested and if it’ll be a good move career wise. Worry about the convo after you get the offer.

like

Of course. But those conversations can be managed after you get the offer—your employer should not hold it against you for exploring options for your career. Most employers expect it—it’s actually more of an anomaly and unhealthy if an employer expects you to share that you are considering other options. Just make sure you don’t backstab anyone or throw your employer under the bus during interviews.

like

This is often where great clients come from. This happens all. The. Time. Don’t tell anyone first. Get it done then announce it

like

This will likely annoy your agency, but it’s manageable under certain circumstances or can be a positive for everyone. Wait until you have an offer you can’t refuse, but some important questions to consider:
- How important is the client to your agency?
- How senior of a client relationship do you own vs other stakeholders at your agency?
- Will the expectation be that you’re managing the relationship of the agency you’re leaving on behalf of your client?

Those are all important questions to clarify or think through to inform how you handle and how you can frame this as a positive for everyone.

like

That sounds promising! You could say how you fully intend to build upon and advocate for the work you and your agency team have done the past three years. It won’t reflect well on you or the agency if things just fall apart when you go, so you have a vested interest in mutual success.

like

Good luck my fellow Weber 🐠 !!! I’ve had a lot of team members become clients, they are great partners to us now and some of my favorite work. Rooting for you.

Thank you Weber colleague. Really appreciate the words of encouragement :)

Haha thank you for the words of encouragement!! Imma going!!!

Your agency will be happy that you’re client side for sure. Keep things positive and talk to your manager about it. Be up front. Also, check if your client has a no poach clause in their contract with your agency. If they do Weber can at least use it as a negotiation point on the next round of pricing/scoping.

Update lol: I got the job.

My current employer wants me to give a longer resignation which would mean I have 0 time between the two jobs .. thoughts?

like

@WS Happy to hear. My former account team made me go on a biz trip the last week of my role with them. They take as much as you give. Lesson learned.

I’m doing that now. I let the portfolio manger know once I had an offer. The hiring manger and client also had a chat with them. It’s all good.

You make a valid, valid point. I’ll remember that. Thank you. Good luck!!

However, the work I do the tricks, logics and solutions I share with team to apply in the project… all are of no use when discussed with the architect guy. The whole team rely upon the wordings/solutions suggested by him only. It feels like my skill/knowledge and experience is of no use.
I feel like what am I doing here….? Any suggestions please.

I have been approached with an opportunity at JP Morgan Chase for their private client advisor role. The book is about 30M all in. I am currently an experienced hybrid asset manager wholesaler and have experience in advising as well. Curious about the opportunity with JPM and if it’s worth it. I currently make about 160k and if JPM would give me a high draw for the first 3 years to build, and if it’s feasible to sustain that 160+ there.

But eventually you advance up the ladder, you are now the boss and your people do all the grunt work. You also have built up expertise which makes the job easier. And you are making the best money of your life. FIRE is no longer so pressing.
