How have you assessed firm culture before making a lateral move? I’m not sure what to ask or how to be sure I’m getting real answers

What is it exactly you want to know about the firm? The firm culture is a lot less important than the people you will work with. Personally, the things I would want to know about are, do people yell and berate with frequency? Do they cancel other people’s vacations regularly? Do they regularly put off giving assignments so that you are always under an unnecessary time crunch? Will you be working late nights or early mornings? Is it generally your choice? These things may or may not fit what you mean by culture. But they will be important factors in whether you enjoy the work.

How do you get real answer to those questions do you need insiders? Or recruiters to answer?

Don’t bother doing more than being yourself during the interview. If you don’t fit in they won’t likely hire you. If you like, tell stories that illustrate the culture you thrive in.

Culture matter a lot, both at the firm level and the group/office level. We are seeing the firm culture differences in plain sight right now. Well run firms that are about people aren’t laying people off. Firms with different values and management philosophies are. Ask how the firm responded on 2008-09. Layoffs? Who? When? When the present storm passes you can also learn a lot about culture by asking what the firm did and didn’t do when the s**t hit the fan in March and April 2020. At the group/office level you can track down former associates on LinkedIn and email or call them. Most will talk to you and especially if the culture is bad you will know it. Before accepting a job ask one of the associates you met during an interview to bring some friends from the office to meet you for drinks. Buy them a few rounds. Watch how they interact and talk to each other. Ask about their lives away from work. Ask how they get along with the partners. Ask how the partners treat staff members. Ask what kind of projects they work on and whether anyone is plotting a career progression for them. Be yourself and speak your mind (but do not badmouth you’re current employer). A bad fit will be readily apparent. Read everything you can about the firm on ATL, FB, and vault. Remember that some negatives from from people who wouldn’t be happy anywhere or are just bitchy generally, but also watch for patterns. Especially among more prominent firms everybody know which have better cultures. You have to do your homework but if you put in the time you can figure out what makes the firm ticks and whether the fit is good for you.

Don’t just ask questions at the interview, also use your contacts to meet associates at the firm. That way you can hope to get honest answers. In my experience it’s possible to do it smoothly if you work to keep a strong network.

My wife’s parents want me to buy them an expensive apartment in India. I live in the US, and wife is a home maker. They do not have a big chunk for retirement so I send them some cash every six months (like I send to my parents). I buy their plane tickets to US, help with additional purchases (like TV, cell phone). They want me to sell my apartment in India which I bought before marriage. But I want to start saving for my own kids. Dont have a home in US, how do I say no? Wife is really angry..

Why don't more partners (esp. tier 2/MBB) just retire at ~40-45? What keeps a person going at that point? Post-Covid, I just cannot seem to find the inspiration to network at a conference such as the AWS DC summit. I initially wanted to get facetime with vendors to check out potential job openings. But it just feels like a large circle jerk where no productive work gets done. And besides all keynote addresses are recorded and available online anyway. Wondering if anyone out there feels differently or has had better experiences from these events? #aws
