Get to know them as a person and not necessarily as management.
We’re all Facebook friends. The original core group of us haven’t worked together for 10 years but we still stay in touch, use each other for references, ask random questions. If you’re friends, you don’t have to “try” to maintain a connection. You just do.
You’ve gotta be ok with not being friends with everyone. But once you establish relationships, you can normally tell if they’re genuine. If they are, you’ll stay in touch with people who are like you and you want to stay in touch with.
General rule of thumb that’s worked for me is, do I get along with them on a level and can I be myself around them. If you can your authentic self will shine through and they’ll want to stay in touch with you.
I feel the same way. And the ones I want to stay connected with are also on part of my Facebook friends, or I'm connected with them in other social media platforms in addition to LinkedIn. Some will forget you within days of you or them leaving the organization, even if they've always seemed to be friendly, so do keep that in mind 🙂
