How have you dealt with an average or negative project review? I did good work, but personality clashes definitely reflected in my review unfortunately. How detrimental is this?

Separate the feedback in 3 buckets: 1. Valid feedback - I don’t speak up in meetings. 2. Perception management related feedback - you think I don’t speak up in meetings, but it was based on the one meeting you were with me and I incorrectly assumed I should give you the floor. I just wanted to make you aware of this. Clearly I should be more proactive in giving you updates and sharing my accomplishments. Could we schedule a 15 min check in every week. 3. Invalid feedback - I facilitated the meeting and I thought based on client’s feedback it went well. Could you help me understand why you think I don’t speak up in meetings? After that, I would also prioritize all the feedback based on its severity and impact. Basically is it development feedback, ie you did well but as you continue to develop, focus on this, vs. problem feedback - you screwed this up. Also make sure you’re not being too sensitive; negative feedback is never easy to take and sometimes we overreact. After you have your thoughts collected, schedule a 1:1 with the feedback provider and walk through it to get on the same page. In my experience, many times people end up pretty close and work through it. I would also pay attention on how things could be interpreted by 3rd party not familiar with the situation when reading your feedback. Sometimes the way things are written make them sound not impactful or worse and the wording needs to be adjusted. So hey bob, I totally understand what you mean by this after talking through it, but to me this reads differently and I’m concerned others may take this out of context. Could you please update the wording to the following? The other thing I would suggest is be proactive: 1. Ask for informal feedback throughout so nothing is a surprise and you have the opportunity to adjust. 2. Write your own review and email it to them beforehand. Bob, I know you will be working on my review, I pulled together some bullets that maybe helpful. I always find that thoughtful and helpful and it gives you the opportunity to provide your perspective. Good luck!

I read somewhere that MBB have a “moral veto” clause where any consultant can opt out of a case if it violates their own sense of morality. An example might be a vegan taking on a meat processing client. Can anyone verify? Is this formalised or just a cultural thing?
