How have your insurance costs changed over the last year? My home insurance jumped 20% which I guess makes sense as the value and cost of replacement have gone up but I was surprised to also see my car insurance go up 20% given it is a 5 y/o non luxury car driven <10k miles a year. Is this purely driven by the used car market or is this abnormal in the current environment?

Probably time to shop around again as I've been with State Farm for years.

Always shop around every couple of years. Takes maybe 30 mins.

My car insurance has gone up by 13% and home insurance by 25%. I shopped around but my current insurance still beat out others

Used cars were selling at a huge premium and parts are taking forever to import or distribute, social inflation is hitting the BI as well

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.

Hey! I work at a healthcare start up and I earn $95k an year as a Software Engineer II based out on Austin, TX. Recently I interviewed with Visa, Austin and got an offer for the Senior Software Engineer role with base - $125k and a sign on bonus - $10k which totals to $135k overall comp. When I tried negotiating the base salary they said that the comp team isn’t budging on it due to team metrics and my experience (2.5 years as SDE). Is this a good offer to take?

My wife and I are working on preparing a good down payment for a home in a couple of years. Right now I have been maxing out 401k and Roth IRA, but considering to reduce those contributions in order to build up for a down payment. Currently own a townhome, and this approach would allow me to rent out my current place instead of using the equity for a partial down payment. Is sacrificing the retirement accounts for a couple of years worth it? I think so, but would like to hear other ideas.

I heard someone make a bold statement that contributing to a traditional 401k versus a Roth 401k were the exact same assuming the same tax rate. I ran the numbers and to my surprise they were not wrong (even considering the earnings). Can anyone explain why a Roth would ever make sense given that income will likely be lower and therefore lower tax rate in retirement?

I learned that my coworker who has been with us less than a year and had no prior experience in healthcare makes very close to the same amount I do. My boss says our rates are based on our experience which is clearly not true. One of our none clinical members who left was making the same as me. Does this seem right to you guys?

1) Will I be asked to work for 12 hours?
2) Will I be given targets and if I don’t meet it, will I be fired or something?

Additional Posts in FIRE Financial Independence Retire Early

I am feeling down. I make $113k and my retirement savings rate is 20%. The amount of money that hits my bank account every month is $4100. I bought a $230k house, which I thought was reasonable for my income. My mortgage is $1850 and my utilities are like $300/month. So my housing cost is like 50% of my take home. Then when shit breaks, (water heater, roof etc.) It's like I can't get ahead. I drive a cheap car, I don't go out to restaurants,at all but life just seems to cost more than $2k/month.
