How helpful are your outside counsel? I find myself doing a lot of legwork and many times, they are just plain wrong.

It depends on what we hire them for. For general litigation, on the whole, they’re useful. But I keep all the transactional stuff in house.

If they’re wrong. You’ve hired bad counsel or you aren’t giving them all the information they need to give you the right answer. You need to figure out what your problem is first before you can fix it

like

You need to coach them on your expectations. If they can't meet them, time to switch.

like

You need to ensure they understand your business. Specialists are great for knowledge, but only a portion of that is useful for your business (and even less so once you prioritize what you need to get done vs. what you wish you could get done).

Very helpful or they are former outside counsel. There are a lot of good lawyers out there. You can expect a lot or move on.

Hi All. I am a little confused what the rule is for practicing as a remote in-house counsel. For example, if my employer’s corporate office is based in Texas, but I live in Florida and work from Florida, do I have to register as in-house counsel in both states or either states. I appreciate any insights. Thanks.

Reasonable base compensation expectations for regional general counsel position (direct report to CLO)? From what I can tell, company revenue is $500M - $1B (privately held company, so tough to know); construction industry (infrastructure / energy / mining); midwest headquarters. I’d be at the lower end of the experience requirements. Looked at MLA report, but looking for additional thoughts/opinions. Thanks!

I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. The response has been very petty, to the point that I’ve been called unprofessional even after I asked the hiring attorney whether I could give longer notice at the current company’s request. Is this normal?

My company historically paid base comp and bonus based on years out of law school. Level 1 is 1-9, and Level 2 is 10+. Diff if $50k+, easily. My team’s work isn’t distributed any differently based on seniority, and we’re all doing the same subject matter. We have a new GC changing it so bonus can be higher (but not lower) if you take on more work.

Do you think this is a fair system? Is it right to push for equal comp, especially given that there’s a new reward system for doing more work?

I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. I don’t have specific expectations but I want to be compensated at least market for a NYC based GC (which looks like cash comp of at least $300k plus bonus, etc). Any suggestions on how people would respond?
