Sometimes you need to understand that you'll never understand. That you physically cannot experience something, so you need to stop relying upon your first hand experiences and listen to learn from others.

Thanks SVP. I want to add to your point though, there’s a thing called empathy. Although I’ve never been shot in my life, I KNOW that shit hurts.
People have vested interests in not understand what’s going on, their livelihoods depend on it.

I’m frustrated that I, an immigrant who’s only been here for a third of my life, have to explain these things to Americans who have lived here all of their lives. It is great that I learned some great things and values in this country, don’t get me wrong, but it is also shocking how some Americans haven’t learned. And it is depressing to realize they never will. 😩

It’s important to understand how personalised all our news and adverts are. We spend most of our time indoors and consume news through social media and the websites we prefer. So this whole situation may genuinely look totally different.
The Guardian newspaper (famous British liberal paper) did a fascinating experiment in the 2016 election where they took about 10 democrat voters and 10 republicans had gave them access to a social media account (FB, I think) which had all the preferences of the opposing side. E.g: the republicans got a FB profile that got adds and had friends that were all pro choice, and Obamacare etc. What was hilarious was that both sides thought the people on the other side were simply insane. Loads of new information and arguments they had never seen before. New facts, new stories, new perspectives. They had no idea how different the world was to their opponents.
