How important is it to keep your camera on during meetings? I want to turn it off but maybe I’m overthinking that it will hinder my career?

If it helps, I basically never turn on my camera unless:
1. It’s a 1:1 meeting
2. I’m presenting on a client call
3. I really like my outfit/look that day

Bottom line, don’t let people peer pressure you. If you’re getting your work done and done well, who cares if your camera is on?

Completely agree! Being work from home is great but you want your face in the minds of people who determine your bonuses, raises, etc. truth of the matter is your work can be great, but if they literally can’t picture your face, you’ll be forgotten. You don’t need it always, but these are my go-tos as well.

I’ll be honest, it makes a difference when it comes to forging connections. We have team mates who are always camera off (I’m sure they have reasons) but the honest answer is that I feel like they’re quieter on calls and make less of an effort to engage. It could just mean that these individuals happen to be that way and camera-off is just a symptom of it. Maybe you’re different and you already know everyone well and are fully engaged in which case go for it

like

Agreed. Totally get camera off occasionally, I do it too. But it you’re off camera, make sure you’re still contributing and speak up or share messages in the chat. If you’re off camera AND say nothing, it gives off the vibe that you’re not paying attention.

I’ve wondered this also. My team love to have them on but others never have them on. I’m reaching a balance now where I put it on for the first few mins of a meeting (if it’s not my meeting to run) and then turn it off.

Yep, I turn mine on in the beginning for greetings and end for goodbyes

I have a rule. I do what everyone else is doing. If the majority are camera off so am I. I don’t overthink it and I don’t feel guilty when I need to go camera off to cook or whatever either ☺️

Everything except large group settings (like town halls ) or early morning/off hour calls (if I wouldn’t be in the office at that hour, I won’t be on camera)

I’m trying to be like you! Do you find yourself being tired or that it has helped with morale?

I hate being camera off!! But that’s my personal preference. I usually don’t participate or feel like I’m part of the meeting if I’m off camera. I usually start scrolling on my phone or working on something else if I’m camera off. If it’s not a meeting I’m actively a part of, I would switch camera off. Sometimes good to introduce with camera on and go off if someone else is presenting.

I think go for a mix and don’t always be camera off

To be honest, I think it’s important if you’re in a client facing role but I find being “on” all day also gets exhausting even more so than actually being somewhere in person. I think it’s starring at your own face all day that gets me. So I follow these rules normally 1) do what everyone else is doing so camera on if most people have it on unless I absolutely dread having a camera on that particular day 2) camera on for client presentations or sensitive calls but routine client meetings like statuses etc I keep a camera off 3) camera on for 1x1 meetings unless another person prefers being off camera 4) camera on for any meetings with my GADs and VPs for optics

like

Also depends on your role. If you’re not client facing you can always be camera off. And the more senior you are the more there’s an expectation for camera on.

Was tasked with designing a campaign for Pride month even though I'm a straight male. I told my boss that I believe someone from our team who identifies as queer would be more appropriate for handling this campaign as I don't wanna feel like I'm intruding in something that doesn't represent me, but she said it is because I am a better designer. Should I take the campaign or double down on them giving it to someone else?

Working on a campaign and I wrote the first version of the script that was chosen. My CW partner crafted it and then I made revisions. It’s been a super collaborative process and so rewarding. We’re both so proud of this piece. It’s manifesto-y and the writing is what makes it sing, so it hurts a little (or a lot) when my partner gets tons of praise from like, THE TOP, for the writing and doesn’t acknowledge me. Do ADs ever get co-writing credits? Do I just need to get over my ego? *big exhale*

I’m actively searching & looking for a new strategist position since my current agency is mismanaging not only myself but the relationship with the client. It’s a dumpster fire.

I’m wondering what questions I should look out for and be aware of as I find myself getting past the HR screens pretty quickly.

Also - if your agency is remote or LA based and hiring, feel free to let me know in the comments as well :)

Im in a junior position, have excellent feedback, work hard. I make very little $. I had 2 job offers and told my current company I couldn’t afford to stay there. They immediately matched. 4 months later I followed up and the timing of the adjustment will now align with the timing cost of living increases for inflation which apparently I’m ineligible for. Should this exempt me from a cost of living increase due the adjusted salary 5 months after we agreed to this?

I’m struggling on how to effectively coach a designer on my team who is a low performer. I’ve been working with them for two years.. but have not seen the growth needed to succeed in this industry. They’re slow, lack creative innovation, and have a hard time designing strategically (designs don’t make sense even from a functionality standpoint).

I’ve tried everything I can think of.. but at this point, account teams would rather request working with interns over this person.

Any advice?
