I know we would all like to have direct access to peer with all the top content providers through DRIX to save on bandwidth but transport for the small guys may not be the route you can justify. There are some good cache server options. What do you use besides Google, Netflix, Facebook, Microsoft, and a newer CDN I’ve checked into Qwilt

At this point the situation is that referral is almost a must if you want a recruiter to look at your resume and screen it. Basically timely and a much higher chance of getting an interview. I work with recruiters on a regular basis as a hiring manager - it's a big difference. Same story all FAANGs
Doesn't make a difference to the outcome of the interview though. So when someone says doesn't make a difference they're probably talking about people who already have interviews.
When you say client do you mean you were at a consultancy or agency and someone that was your client liked you so much that they referred you for an internal role at Google? (That’s cool!)
It helps you get into the pipeline faster, it doesn’t lower the bar for the interview process though.
Overall, it’s obviously more helpful to have one than not but I don’t believe it’s an absolute requirement.
I am biased cause I’ve used it and it’s worked and it def isn’t for all roles; but, I think if you have a portfolio, website, whatever-you-wanna-call-it you can attach to your application you have a higher likelihood of landing interviews.
For web dev roles if you can show the interviewing manager that you can make and host your own website that is a pretty sure shot way to get attention kinda thing. Wouldn’t necessarily need a intro if you have top tier projects on your portfolio too… All about how you sell yourself.
