How important is your undergrad when applying to top MBA programs ? I went to a non-target school due to financial limitations. I did decent in terms of GPA, but does this put me at a disadvantage?

It also likely that the person who went to top private school got a good job out of undergrad. And is good at testing so got a good gmat. But if you have a good job and a great gmat than this shouldn’t be as big of a problem

like

The main impact will be tangential (better UG makes a better first job more likely, and a better 1st job makes a top b-school acceptance more likely as well) That being said, I went to a state school, and got into both GSB/HBS...so it’s not impossible by any means.

like

It’s a factor. It won’t keep you out of anywhere but a better school helps. Mba programs want a diverse class. So an average state school might send 1 person a year while the top private undergrads will be feeding many more people in

Agree with ACN 1. Somewhat important but not a dealbreaker by any stretch. They’ll look at GMAT and career trajectory + career potential much more closely than undergraduate program. It just so happens that a stronger undergraduate school USUALLY results in better career prospects but not an absolute.

While correlation is different. That said, all things equal their is a preference for the candidate with the better undergrad which I think is ridiculous

Not to be a salty salamander but I hate that it matters. If you went to a Harvard/Stanford you will get less out of their MBA programs because you already have the brand!

Kill the GMAT (90th percentile or higher). Then undergrad school work matter.

For those of you that left big 4 accounting to do MBA, did you leave at Senior level (3-4 YOE) or at the Manager level (5 YOE). I would assume to leave at manager level would be more ideal as when you come back to the workforce you should at the very least be ready to come in at manager or above at your next job? Thoughts?
