Your entry salaries will easily be $40-50k lower with an MPH at most places
MBA has more flexibility
MBA>MHA>MPH/MPA etc
PwC1 doesn’t need data, it’s a fact
MPH is definitely not = to MBA but it is a highly valued HC specific degree. I tend to think of it more highly than MHA because there are a lot more stats, epi, and math expectations
And a counter to M1’s point above... I view the MHA more highly because of its curriculum based around business classes such as Finance, Healthcare Accounting, Healthcare Marketing, etc. I feel the MPH is more theoretical and policy (hence the name) based which doesn’t do much in the way of preparing the students for the business world. It’s great for research and NGO stuff
What do you want to do after this degree? I have both (done separately) and my MBA is much more valuable except for in some niche fields. Or go to a school that does a dual degree, like UMich.
I have an MBA and MHA and my MBA is infinitely more helpful. The MHA helped get me access to a network of healthcare leaders but the curriculum was very soft compared to business school. If I have two equally qualified candidates in front of me and the only difference is their graduate degree, the MBA will always have the edge
MBA with healthcare focus > MBA> MHA.
Do MHA if you want healthcare specificity.
I have an MBA, but I took MHA classes at the same time. My MHA classmates started around $80k-90, I started at $135k.
It also happens with PhDs is life sciences consulting too. You'll start out in an associate consultant/analyst type role. MBAs start as full consultants.
For the record, I don't think any of this is fair, and most people with advanced degrees in healthcare/life science are going to be more useful than people with a generic MBA, but the cost of MBA labor is just more expensive and you will get paid better for it. 🤷🏼♂️
Since most MBAs have prior experience you’re really comparing someone with MBA + Experience vs. MHA when looking at starting salaries. If you have relevant experience with an MHA, you may be able to close the gap.
Same as SC1. I took all those classes too and am frustrated to hear that there are people who don’t understand the coursework. It’s not “theoretical”
As someone with and MPH I had to comment a rebuttal to the director who listed the classes we apparently don't take haha. I actually took those listed (and named exactly the same)... Finance, Healthcare accounting, marketing, as well as econ, strategy, and stats. actually only took one policy class. some programs let you choose management or policy tracks within the mph 👌
MPH, SC, 1y FTE, started 80k
Whoa, pwc1, where are you getting your data? I’ve never experienced that
Wow, maybe I’m in a very specific subset of HC consulting, but that differential doesn’t exist at my firm
Def depends what you want to do. Do you want to do project management or do you want to be in the weeds of the public health research and implementation? I have an MPH and couldn’t do the work I wanted to with an MBA, but also can’t get to the same salary as an MBA.
