Best food in the country. You’ll need a car. Horrific highways. Great bar scene. Hot. Hot. Hot. No state income tax. If you’re looking to live there long-term, the metro area is full of lakes and reasonably priced houses.
I love it here. Just moved back home after being in Chicago for 20 years. It’s definitely not the city I left. Not by a long shot.
If you’re moving here for the music and art scene, all of that is gone. -Displaced by high real estate costs brought out by Silicon Valley transplants.
If you’re moving here to be part of the tech boom, you’ll be happy.
For real estate, the housing market behaves much like the SF area. Bring your pre-qual and be ready to make an offer on the spot because it will be gone that day and probably for higher than asking. Bidding wars aren’t uncommon. And what’s on the market is generally unremarkable. Not much character, rubber stamped out, beige.
If you want something interesting, fork out $$$$$$ in Travis Heights or go out further to Georgetown, Taylor, or Bastrop for beautiful old Victorians.
You money will go MUCH further because of low taxes in general and no state income tax.
Good luck!
It’s great, but if you lose or leave your job you have no options. There are very few ad jobs in Austin.
Regarding Bakery, I’ve wondered about them. It raises an eyebrow when you see the same job posted for months. It signals that they’re either having trouble attracting talent or they’re having trouble keeping it.
I’ve been investigating a potential move from California and I’m seeing some great signs. Tesla, Apple, Oracle and Google have all
moved offices recently I’d say that’s a solid group to follow!
If you think a huge tech presence makes a place cool then you’ll probably be happy there
Born and raised in Texas. Went to UT. Used to love Austin, but now I hate going back. Everything is new and just like every other city that grew too fast. Expensive (for what you get). Terrible traffic. Getting whiter every day, it seems, which is a bummer because I miss the Mexican culture.
That said, the weather is hot but not THAT bad. There are a lot of things to do outside (after you spend MORE time driving there) like trails, rivers, and lakes. There's great salt water fishing down in the Corpus Christi area. If you like Texas-style BBQ, it's hard to beat. Tons of tech companies now, so more in-house jobs. Like almost everywhere, rural and older suburban areas can be Trumpy, but oh well. (Then again, I'm a white male, so I realize it doesn't really affect me outside of it just being annoying)
If you're wanting what Austin used to be, I'd look at other small cities like Greenville. For the money and COL, I'd rather live in Chicago, especially if you're in media.
Greenville, SC? You have to be kidding me.
I love it here. I moved from the Midwest. It’s still affordable compared to other larger cities in the country. The weather is awesome, sure it’s hot as hell for a few months, but the rest of the year makes it worth it.
The food is fantastic. Not just bbq, either. The music scene was fun pre-Covid. Lots of great bands comes through on tour and I’m a fan of the local music too.
As far as agencies go, there are only 3-4 that you want to work at. The rest are not great. Plenty of in-house opportunities though.
What VP of Creative 1 said. I’ll only add that the local politics of the smaller townships north of ATX, like Leander and Georgetown, while quaint, are rabidly pro-Trump right now. More folks from Chicago, NYC and SF might balance things out a bit, which would be a welcome change.
P.S. — People move down South because of the weather, politics and friendly people. Their hard-line liberal stances tend to erode over time. For better or worse.
I like(d) it. Pros: Good mid-sized city. You got hippies and rednecks but they seem to get along for the most part. Great bbq. It really is. My kind of music. Cons: not very diverse. Whites mostly, followed by Mexicans. Not many Asians. All in all too hipster. So many people doing the beard, short sides haircut, and sleeve tat uniform. And a lot of em are like “oh you listen to that band? I USED to listen to them. Know who you should listen to now?..” stop trying so hard. But seriously I liked living there. Way more good than bad. It could get boring after a while if you’re from a big city.
Thanks both of you. Very helpful insights, would def. help me in pivoting out my situation.
I moved from NYC to ATX 4 years ago and will never go back. Heads up the Ad scene here is VERY small here. But lots of corporate jobs to settle down at.
Love it.
What are you looking for? I love austin bc there’s good hiking and water activities, nice parks too. But it has gotten expensive the past two years and it will only continue to as more tech people move here and people from bigger markets who are willing to pay more for apartments and houses. I don’t find the traffic bad but I also don’t commute in and out of austin or across the bridges from south side. My agency and house are both on east side. Lots of live music and bars and good food but it’s definitely not anything amazing. Not a lot of ad agencies here too so I’ve been stuck at the same job for two years. Lastly, if tech is what appeals you just know they’re only moving here for the state taxes lol and most of their campuses aren’t gonna be in downtown austin and then you’ll be stuck in traffic. If you can afford to live near your job and love hot weather, then you may like it! I’ve only been here 2.5 years and it’s nice but I’ll probably move next year, it’s starting to feel like SF where I lived for a year and hated
Ugh that bacon 😍
One of the posts touched on this. There is going to be a water crisis in Austin. The temperatures are going through the roof.
Having lived in Vegas at one point in my life, they’ve been talking about that for years. Still hasn’t happened.
Austin sits on one of the largest aquifers in the country. We have droughts, but household water needs aren’t an issue. That’s someone who’s thinking this is like LA. It’s not. We’re not in a desert as Vegas and LA are.
