A lot of you need to hear this 👀
Is corporate development an interesting option?
I started remotely about 10 months ago. It was fine! A lot of new people have started since then and it’s not an issue.
Some things that helped,
- Setting up 1:1’s to meet people during on boarding.
- Keep your camera on.
- use the chat feature
While I started my role in person. I helped onboard another PM that started remotely. To strengthen bonds and build rapport I recommended/helped them with the following:
- shadow meetings with me (I facilitated intros)
- encouraged setting coffee meet & greets via zoom
- camera on for every meeting
- using chat for meetings where they don’t normally have a speaking role
- having them set recent photos of themselves on all business platforms
- attending online happy hours or events where we go round robin and introduce everyone
I found daily check ins with a designated buddy extremely helpful to start. The frequency might seem excessive but it’s a dedicated time to ask questions that you’ll need to ask anyway and it facilitates more water cooler type chats beyond work. They can also act as your connector to other team members and company resources and give you the inside scoop on things. This person could be your manager or a peer on your team
On camera is huge. I started a new role remote and no one went on camera, it was a bumpy start. Took 4 months to feel connected.
You just gotta be patient. It takes time to get in a rhythm but you’ll get there. I started a remote PM freelance gig and it took a few weeks to get my footing and each week a little more. I had practically no onboarding. My team has been awesome.
