I am with an International firm in Italy, we pay all lawyers 5 months in full, including Partners, who will get their normal monthly drawings.

We pay lawyers full salary for 12 weeks, irrespective of title. Whenever your leave ends to you expect to return full time or on a reduced schedule? And do you have anyone reliable to fully babysit your practice while you’re out?
Chief
Yep. They basically continue being paid exactly as if they were working although some share a chunk of their originations credit with the case babysitters as a goodwill gesture, which reduces their numbers and pay a bit. But that’s between the partner in leave and the babysitters. From the firms perspective it’s as if the partner never left.
Congrats on the birth of your child. My youngest turns 20 today. Seems like he arrived yesterday.
And you’re right that any firm that’s been around for more than a few years should have had a partner become a mom before today, but better late than never, I suppose.
My firm (also boutique) didn’t have a policy and the they ended up offering 6 weeks at 50% pay, based on my average billables. I had expected nothing, since our compensation structure is a fee split and I wouldn’t be bringing in anything during this period, so it was fair enough, I suppose, although I think we should do better to encourage young women to remain in the field.
Agreed. Because I’m the first to be in this situation, I want to be sure I’m advocating for a policy that will benefit the women lawyers coming up the ranks behind me.
Have you considered remote work?
I’ll likely work remotely at least some of the time after I return from leave, but won’t want to be working during leave.
This is the exact same situation I am in. I am wondering how you approached it and what was the ultimate agreement on the policy reached?
I was paid for 3 months based on the average I made each month in the prior year. I then decided to take an extra 2 months unpaid, which the firm was fine with. I felt that was fair and in line with what we give to associates.
