Having graduated from an IIM, I can tell you that you would be lucky to get a fixed compensation of 20L after an one year MBA with 5 years of work experience. You would end up spending a lot of money and time just to put a brand on your CV. And you might end up with a lower paying job in the process.
I would suggest that you do a Micromasters while continuing your job, or skill up with certifications in upcoming new age technologies.
An IIM/ISB etc tag will help you in the initial years, after that your experience counts much more.
Same here. I too did 1-year MBA from one of the IIMs however time spent, opportunity cost and recovery of money spent takes years. Better is to add on to experience and current industry skills by doing additional certification courses in technology and business through coursera etc. My two cents.
I am currently in a management consulting role and wish to switch to General Management roles in conglomerates.
I agree with both the answers above. Unless your experience is in high paying fields like Data Science or top consulting firms, rising above 20L band will take time. You can broaden your knowledge through Coursera / Edx or go for deeper expertise in an area of your preference and then find the right position.
One way in which 1 year MBA can help is if you have a clear idea about high paying roles you seek and you can utilise the time during MBA and alumni base to get into those roles after you complete MBA. Networking with alumni will play a big role. You may target senior managerial positions in bigger companies or executive positions in smaller yet fast growing companies. You should work towards roles where your current expertise combined with your MBA should make you a preferred candidate. Since you have 5 years experience, MBB firms and the like can give you a good salary and also a very good learning opportunity. If you are in a position to invest the time and money and you are really keen on 1 year MBA, it is better you go for it sooner than later. With the brand value, you should also capitalise the knowledge and network to the maximum.
For general management roles, you may go for a 1 year in exec MBA from top IIMs or ISB PGP. You would need to actively leverage the alumni network right from the start. ISB also had PGP Pro. Not sure how good it is for switching to such roles though. You can check it out.
