East coast and west is all the same. It is on you to set boundaries; from their perspective they love free extra labor
It really depends on your group and your practice. I do patent lit and work for a pretty reasonable group. I work a couple hours during the weekend, but it’s mostly because I want to get a jump start on the week. At least you can see the big deadlines coming from months away, so you can at least plan around those.
That being said, the days are definitely longer than they are for a clerkship. But I guess that’s why we get paid the bigger bucks.
I’m a first year V10 lit associate in Chicago. I haven’t billed more than 210/month yet. Had weekends totally off from April to June
Yeah but you're a first year. Just you wait.
Worked at two different NorCal big law firms (also after clerking). Of course you’re under constant threat of ruined nights and weekends - can’t escape that.
I’ve billed around 2200 every year and I’m particularly protective of my weekends which are actually mostly free. Generally work 8:30-5:30 then more 9-11 or so.
Edit: currently a 5th year at my second firm.

Oh yeah, LOL, that was more a joke about it not existing.
