How likely is one to succeed at using a competing job offer to negotiate a raise at your own company? I’m happy at my current company aside from compensation, and don’t want to leave. But I wonder whether getting a better offer and trying to negotiate better pay in the current role is a losing proposition, because even if it is accepted, it may sour the current company on me, and put a target on my back in case people need to be let go. I also know I’m not indispensable to my company.

That is definitely a risk. So you should be prepared to actually accept the other offer. It also depends whether your present company thinks they can reasonably be competitive with the other offer.

There have been studies/articles about this. It’s usually works but typically you’ll end up leaving within a year

I wouldn’t try that at my company. First, I doubt it would work and second, even if it did, it would negatively impact my future upward mobility. And it would be really awkward if it didn’t work but I still decided to stay.

If you’re underpaid you may consider requesting a raise and compiling publicly available salary info to support the argument. I imagine they’d get the hint that you are prepared to leave if you aren’t compensated fairly. Doesn’t mean they’ll give you a raise but helps you know where you stand in their eyes.

I gave one to my best friend as a thank you for helping me get the job I worked at with him for the past two years, as I’ve left and moved on to the next adventure. Figured since we were best friends it be nice to have a watch that symbolizes the time we spent working together. I gotta say I’m absolutely blown away by how nice it feels on my wrist, Orient gives you a lot of watch for $120 lol.
