How long after making partner did you buy a new home? Value? If you didn’t why not?

I still rent my primary property. I pay roughly half as much as the mortgage would be.

Not me, but one of my close friends made principal at his midsize firm a few years ago. They bought a ~$850-900k house shortly thereafter, but had been on the market for about a year already. They both made good money before his promo, so it didn't really impact their house budget.

Median non-starter SFH prices here are in the mid $600s, so it wasn't a huge budget upgrade.

Can you expand on your question?
Is this about upgrading? Second home? First home?
I live in the same house I lived in when I was an MD with no plans of moving, and suspect others are similar, so trying to understand the gist of your question.

Nahh also curious how conservative people are and what their thinking is. I narrowed it too much with my previous comment.

Tax laws in AU are different but I understand most first year partners there will sink a lot of capital into a big new house to offset partner level income. Any similar tax advantage in the US?

I paid off the balance on my primary mortgage the year after I made partner - around 500K I think . Then we rented out that house a few years later and upgraded to a house in a nicer neighborhood which I think we will keep as our forever home

New home within the first year of making partner. I had one child and was working on a second and our existing house was too small.

Stayed in the same fairly humble house (worth way less than $1m).

Spend our money on saving for the kids school and lots of international travel, sports and adventures

For people who live and plan to buy a home in HCOL cities, what’s your savings strategy for a down payment?

Currently 26, make $120K and put about 10% post tax into a Roth 401k and then anywhere from 20-40% into VOO. Goal is to be able to afford a down payment for a $1.5M home in 5-7 years.

Sometimes I get a bit concerned I’m not putting enough towards retirement, but with how expensive homes, can’t really budget any more towards it.

Should I rent out my home or sell it? I bought a home earlier this year and need to move due to unforeseen circumstances. I tried listing my home in October but got no interest so I opted for renting it out and waiting until next summer potentially. I'm seeing things start to move again in my area with the slight drop in rates. I'm just about breaking even on the rental, and there's the hassle of managing it from out of state. Should I try to sell it again now or continue to rent it out?

Does goodwill simply mean the buyer overpaid?

I will be moving to a new City soon and may have 2 offers, one is a small firm, another is Aws. Although AWS is the company I can see myself be successful in, since they encourage their employees to grow, I have heard a lot about Aws and other big companies laying off people when I see posts on LinkedIn hence I am afraid to jump into it and my budget after taking moving expenses out of my pocket will be tight too so as to survive during lay off in a big city in case. Any suggestions?

After 2 years of a pandemic and working independently for many years, I am not feeling interviews AT ALL. There are points in the interview where I want to just say "Look! Either hire me or don't".

How can I get over this feeling? I'm over the whole "stand in the line of fire to prove how good I am" bs. Any recommendations for getting over this or possible industries to pivot into to avoid bs interview processes and ghosting?

Partners - what do you do with excess cash flow (outside of IRAs)? And how do you manage it? My spouse has great comp (equivalent of 1st year Partner with a great DB pension.). I have good comp and should make MD this year if things go my way. We have zero debt besides mortgages (rental, primary and vacation) which is still less than 25% of HHI. Just had a kid so will save for college. Trying to anticipate excess cash flow…

I've heard a couple of things about how the partner pension amount @ PwC is determined, both similar in approach.

Both calculations I have heard of result in an annuity paid until death, at which point a surviving spouse (if any) receives the annuity.

The first calculation I have heard is that you get 80% of your highest earning year as a partner (e.g. If your best year was $1M, you'd get $800k as an annuity).

The second calculation I have heard is that they look at your three highest earning years as a partner, and take the second highest and you get 100% of that. (e.g if your three highest earning years were $1M, $800k, and $1.2M, you'd receive $1M as an annuity).

Is ANY of this true, or just all rumor? Any PwC partners that can chime in and explain the pension plan fact for fact? Perhaps with sample numbers?
