How long are peoples’ standard non-competes for? Especially at Partner level?

I’d engage an HR attorney. If the non-compete is so restrictive that you can’t practice your profession, it’s usually not enforceable unless they pay you for the duration.

Usually about a year but kpmg and Accenture technically have a 6 month cool off. Accenture technically has a 12 month cannot work for competitors. It all comes down to having attorney involved. Deloitte has least flexibility esp if you’re equity P.

Depends on where you go, deloitte to PwC for example PwC has cracked that nut.

like

Agree that it won’t apply directly but the actual enforcement on these is getting increasingly more difficult. The problem is with them holding equity I’ve seen several folks walk away from 250k+ as a “penalty”

For Partners KPMG has 6 month notice period and a 2 year non compete that applies to any client you worked with or previously tried to sell to in the prior 2 years.

like

This is correct for kpmg.

1 year. Some are more concerned about you bidding on work at a prior client. That is, they are more concerned about you taking a client with you than going to work for a competitor.

I watched a competitor walk his 100m boom of business from IBM to Deloitte. Client called up IBM and said “you will not enforce your non-compete or you will never do work here again”. Bonkers.

like

2 years!

Does anyone have experience with how enforceable these really are in New York? PwC is 6 month written notice 18 month non compete.

6 months

Question to this group. If there were no financial hit for leaving your firm (lost pension, non compete etc) - would you leave?

2 years for me

Yes

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.

All -
I am interviewing for a Strategy leadership role at a SaaS company. A bit rusty on interviews so crowdsourcing from senior folks here, what are best practices or good examples of certain behavioral questions.

1. What is your weakness? I can talk at length about strengths but unclear what weakness to state so as to not mess up my chances.

2. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? This question is tough because there aren't very many levels above me so cannot say in an EVP role.

We are at a level where by making 5% returns on our net-worth we can sustain our current lifestyle.

What should this mean from a lifestyle perspective? Keep it the same (but then why work), step/up a notch (but once you increase you cant go back), or make one off splurges as excess cash accumulates? How do others things about it?

Is there a general expectation that a Partner has an MBA?

I doubt it's required at most firms but I'm a pretty senior staff and when I speak with Partners, they seem to speak with an MBA level of business knowledge which extends past their technical skillset.

I realize that's what makes them good Partners but it makes me wonder if I realistically need to get an MBA to keep growing and hit Partner.
