Not long. A week or so. I learned the hard way

Nothing too horrible, I still took the job. But I planned on having more time to give notice, etc. And I was HOUNDED by the firm until I responded

Two weeks is standard. Beyond that, you should make sure you are staying in touch with the firm (setup calls with associates etc.) so they know you’re still interested.

I’m assuming there’s no deadline in the offer letter? I’d say the majority of offer letters have a deadline. Some firms like Latham usually don’t put a deadline though.

Is it bad to accept on the deadline?

Hi, I am currently making a lateral move from a B4 Real Estate Tax group to another B4 RE Tax group. The current offers are for both Chicago office. The first offer came from PwC RE Tax at 105K base with 15K Bonus. Deloitte BTS with 40% of the work also being RE (already knowing PwC offer) offerer is100k base plus 15k sign on bonus. I tried to negotiate the bonus with Deloitte, but recruitment replied immediately no final offer, meanwhile PwC has raised the sign on to 24k bonus. Wwyd?

Is it a big deal if a partner questions how much time you spent on something? Can’t they just write off time that seems excessive, or am I missing something? Sometimes I take a really long time to do things because I switch matters frequently, and I do a lot of research to make sure I’m doing things right.

Has anyone or is anyone considering paying their secretaries via Venmo? I know it’s not classy but at the end of the day, they just want money and that’s the fastest way to give them that. I’ve heard of some gift card scams lately so I’m hesitant to go that route this year.

A partner put me in charge of a specific project that I ran independently. Things were going well. The client began asking me to do more and more, including revamping their system and internal trainings. The client even gave me a litigation matter. Suddenly, the partner became more involved. I was removed from meetings concerning the revamping, my trainings were cancelled, and he started micromanaging. He has now sidelined me from the project and trash talked me to the client. I am very upset.

PSA: Buy a house if you are able. I spent the first 5 years in big law annoyed and upset with many things but my life has gotten so much better since I bought a house. I now have a separate office to work from and actually like working from home. I no longer have loud neighbors I share a wall or ceiling/floor with. I have an extra room for my mother in law to stay in and visit my infant child (instead of taking him to her house for visits only once a month). Also no worry about rent hikes.

Can we be honest for a second? No one has a clear policy for how we should be billing our time and no one wants to ask. I’ve heard perspectives ranging from, “a good faith estimate at the end of the week is sufficient” to “you need to have a timer going at all times and if you don’t turn it off when you pee, you’re committing an ethical violation”... also, “Bill anything that moves the deal forward” vs. “You can’t bill for collating documents. That’s not legal work.”
