How long did it take you to adjust to your 1st in-house role? I started my first in-house role a few months ago. This job is exactly in-line with my law firm experience….but every time I join a call I feel like everyone is speaking a different language. There are just so many acronyms, company lingo terms I’m not familiar with & company-specific processes. I’m just wondering when everything will start to “click”….because right now I’m super overwhelmed.

9-12 months to feel like I could keep up. I’m still learning something every day and it’s been 18 months now. It takes time, especially if you’re working with people who have been with the company for a long time. Hang in there!

like

Keep a list of acronyms! My company has a list and I refer to it at least once a week even after 9 months

like

I manage a lot of new ACCs. I typically see and expect 3 months to go from blind panic to an idea of what’s going on and roughly 6-9 months to “get it” and be able to operate mostly autonomously and with good judgment.

like

I started in summer 2021 and things didn’t click until January 2022! Be patient with yourself and ask questions :) you got this!

Took me about 6 months to feel confident that I could talk the talk

like

Still learning more and more about the biz even 1 year in. It’s like a law school exam fact pattern… except you submit your answer and then, two weeks later, the prof sends you more facts to consider… and this goes on for months

like

Then they say the first set of facts was wrong. Then they say they aren’t even interested in learning the solution to their problem and what was even the question to start with?

I joined EY gds a month ago and want to leave because the manager is not good and always confused about the work that he wants me to do. He keeps on changing his wants after every call sometimes 2-3 times in a day. This leads me to working late nights almost every day and also weekends. I am looking to exit from ey gds asap. Will it leave a bad mark on my resume? Also what can i tell recruiters about the reason of leaving job, as most recruiters dont want understand valid reasons. Plz guide.

For those of you with high functioning triads, what makes your engineering lead standout? I am in a product team where the engineering lead was a good developer who was promoted into role when the previous lead left. They are a good IC, but have trouble staying out of the weeds and I don't feel like the engineers have enough thought leadership. Trying to work on this dynamic with coaching, but I'd love some insights into what you see as must have attributes/ways of working for that role.

I requested a salary adjustment based on my responsibilities as a UXR. I’ve been in the role for nearly 2y and finally heard back about my salary adjustment.

I was expecting a 24% increase as I was severely underpaid but received an 18% increase. I realize this is still a great bump and I’m grateful for it but I also want to be paid fairly.

Is it worth trying to secure the difference? I’m also actively interviewing and applying at other companies.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I just put in my two weeks to go to an AM 100 law firm to work in a niche practice area. I've never worked in a firm before. I started of doing compliance (non-attorney role) and then went in-house (acting GC for medium size company got a year). Any advice for someone who never had firm experience? If you went back to a firm what do you think you would have to prepare for? (Besides billiable hours and no life. ) Also, fwiw, I graduate in 2018.
