How long did it take you to learn golf well enough to go out and play on a course? Just started taking lessons three weeks ago and really excited for it, but I’m not sporty and want to manage my expectations 😅

At minimum you should be advancing the ball generally forward and not swinging and missing the ball. You should also know enough etiquette to where you move relatively quickly and don’t get in people’s way while you’re playing. I would say it’s more about achieving that rather than a set amount of time as everyone will accomplish these goals at their own pace.

I learned on the course. When I took lessons my teacher said certain things I did were advanced way beyond beginner bc of that, while others were atrocious for not having real lessons. In the beginning stages, just plan to scramble (pick up your ball and advance to your partner’s ball location) so you’re keeping the pace of play. It’s worth it to get on a course asap as long as you can play without hurting yourself. Enjoy!

Are you learning solo? If you know anyone else who plays decently, just book a tee time with them on a public course and have a casual afternoon. Maybe start with 9 as a full 18 can be hard on your body Lots of places also have lessons or group course time. And then country clubs often have ladies’ groups for learners/socializing and playing through a few holes — though that tends to be more membership oriented

It took me about a year before I felt comfortable on a course and enjoyed myself. I had tried courses before that, but it wasn’t as fun because I was still frequently missing the ball and was generally slow. Once you can hit the ball consistently and hit it relatively straight most of the time (doesn’t have to always be in the air) then you’re probably fine. It also depends on the course, I would stick to shorter / easier ones.

I have my first student teacher this year. I got an idea at a conference to have her journal everyday. I've created some reflective prompts to encourage her to celebrate successes and intentionally plan lessons. So far she says it's been really helpful. I actually journal with her, and I'm loving it!
