How long do I have to stick it out as a junior before I throw in the towel and admit that law is not for me? When do I find my niche and when does it get better? For context, I’m a second year following a judicial clerkship. I didn’t particularly care for litigation and am now doing transactional work. I don’t know why the paycheck isn’t enough to motivate me. Right now I tell myself I’m in the cocoon phase and if I give up now I will never be a butterfly— but when will it happen??

You’ve barely practiced - I feel like you should give it at least as long as you were in law school

I was a legal assistant for 2 years before law school though, and this is not much better, and I mean I do substantive work like drafting.

I’m trying to stick it out for 5 years. 2 years left for me.

ETA: I often remind myself that I could have 3 10-year careers and still retire before the age of 60. I constantly think about what my next career is going to be and it gives me something to work for. Save up enough money now and I can pick almost anything I want!

Did you like the clerkship (outside of any dislike you had for your judge, did you find the work interesting)? If you did, maybe try to find a career clerk position or something similar. If you don’t like litigation or transactional, maybe look at getting into compliance.

I fear this due to the fact that I simply talk strategy and roadmaps with no technical experience of having ever done these activities myself.
