How long does it take to adjust to a new job? I don’t hate it, but I definitely don’t love it. Maybe I’m just burnt out on the industry in general, or I’m suffering from the new job blues? 😐☔️

Yeah it’s a weird feeling for sure. I feel like every new agency job I’ve ever started I immediately know how I feel about it. This one I can’t tell at all.

I think I’m honestly just feeling a bit lonely as silly as that sounds. I went from working with a department of 20 people that I adored, to now eating lunch at my desk in silence every day for the past few weeks.

like

I’m right there with you, OP. It takes time. I can honestly say I thought I was going to die in silence, eating my PB&J at my desk. But, after a month here, I’ve made some friends. I definitely came into this job already burnt out, so I had to do the emotional work to recover from that first, then I felt comfortable making friends and being open. I’m sorry you’re going through it! Time is the only answer

Same here OP. having lunch on my own in a food court on a Monday as we speak. Usually don’t have issues making new friends at a place - this place everyone does their own thing and people are checked out by 5 so it’s very different. More focus on work life balance than doing award winning or culturally impactful work it seems.

like

I just left somewhere like this. I was there almost 3 years, and it was the first place in my entire career that I made zero friends. The loneliness made all of the politics and all of the bs worse Save yourself, OP, and don’t wait as long as I did to bail.

I’d say 3-6 months. If you still aren’t feeling it then start looking around. Nothing wrong with that.

like

I'd say 2 weeks to not be tired all the time, and 3-6 months to feel comfortable and some bit of control.

Interesting! I usually have the opposite reaction: The new job high, which typically decreases in time :-) As for eating alone at your desk. Seems to be the trend unfortunately but I agree we should all make the effort to have lunch with coworkers more often so we don’t become totally asocial.

Same sitch here!!

Took me more than 6 months. A lot of it comes to the social aspect and work climate in general

like

Same! I’m going to give it 3 months. Hang in there!

It took me a solid 6-8 months to get the lay of the land, establish some work pals, and get acquainted with the larger group. I do think that’s the sweet spot to determine if you wanna stay, i.e after “too soon to tell” and before “wait, this place actually sucks. Like a whole lot. For many reasons.”

like

Hang in there, I’m right there with ya

like

I’m exactly the same. Starting my 3rd month but getting burnt out on the industry and the career. It’s good for a week and then I just don’t care anymore and I become a Ron Swanson. But don’t know what I can do for any job/career

like

Have you thought about going client-side?

like

@P1 I’m a WOC but I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great people throughout my career across all disciplines. Except for my last agency where it was hard AF if you weren’t white

like

I feel ya! I’d say 3 months for me at my current job, at the most 6.

Wow. I NEVER make friends at work. LOL. It’s the norm for me, and the least of my concerns. Then again, I’m a minority so it’s a part of the way we survive (avoiding fake work “friends”). My main concern is not getting fired the first 3 - 6 months.

like

Read my mind. I’m 6 mos in and I don’t love it, trying to challenge myself tho and shift attitude. It’s okay but I’m just not passionate about it. Really may just be that I’ve been at this for a long while.

like

Been there. It’s tough and definitely went through the same “is advertising right for me” thoughts. Hang in there. You’ll meet some great people at the very least. If you’re really not feeling it in a couple of months, there’s more out there. Try and keep your spirits up and know you’re not alone

is there a role name that is in between
Head of UX and Head of Engineering (in a tech startup)?

my day to day basically consists of working on product & ux with PMs and stakeholders, but also coding, increasing devs skills, code quality and providing them with new processes and tools.

the only thing i don't do is manage people.

current tasks are: coding new features, work on a call for tenders (im doing the mockups), building a design system, and design some of the future features.

Okay so I am quitting my job because of my supervisor.

Do I:
A) just leave and say it’s due to career progression
B) Leave but tell them in a diplomatic way it’s not the company or for career progression it is because I cannot work with him as he has no leadership or management skills. ( without going into details)
C) tell them everything ( I find this option petty especially if there is no outcome (I am definitely leaving)
If you think there is another option -lmk
