How long does it take to start ramping up after joining a new firm? Is it normal to 1 or 3 billables a day your first 1-2 weeks?

Even longer. Many firms treat the first three or so months as a ramp up.

Took me 3+ months to have a consistent workload.

Depending on market/practice area, also consider it might be generally slower between Thanksgiving and NY

I'll admit, I'm nervous because I gather about 20-25 hours week and I started only 6 weeks ago.

I can't imagine not being canned if this stretches go 3 months

like

It took me a month to ramp up but that was during 2021 when deal work was crazy.

like

I ramped up super quickly (litigation, super busy at my firm), but that first week I only billed 15.1 billable hours. (Hit 200 in the following month though, with no signs of slowing down.)

like

Yeah ditto 3+ months.

like

Depends on the year you came over. I was billing full days by day 4.

like

Was actually busy after about 2 months. First month was extremely slow.

They take. 16% cut but the projects are lucrative

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?

There’s always a Delaware entity in every financing deal so there’s always a need for a Delaware opinion. Why don’t more big firms open tiny offices there and just keep that stuff in-house rather than refer it one the shops there? No offense to RLF, Dorsey, Morris Nichols, etc.

The managing partner of my office likes to make jokes about Covid now that it is “over” (either in small group convos or speeches to the office). My dad died from Covid, and I honestly feel like it’s so insensitive for him to make these comments when he knows that I lost my dad to it. Our office isn’t that big, and I don’t think many people forget being told that someone they know lost someone from Covid. It has made me consider leaving because of it, but the economy isn’t great.

Feel sort of guilty and try to avoid talking about hours with them. I'm just hoping the firm doesn't give them trouble...

Question for the Biglaw Bowl: How common is it to take a pay cut when being promoted from associate to income partner? I had heard about this happening at some lower ranked V100 firms. But now that I’m more senior and my friends are making partner, it sounds like it’s a lot more common than I thought and happens at firms where I wouldn’t expect it. Does anyone here have any insight into this? How common is it, how much of a pay cut, and how long until your pay catches up to associate pay?
