How long does it typically take to ramp up as a mid-level lateral? I’ve gotten maybe 5 hours of billable work since I started 3 weeks ago…

I was up to 130 hours a month pretty quickly but took 4 months to start hitting 160+.

I’ve lateraled a few times with different experiences. My most recent lateral i went from 0-60 real quick. 50 hours between first couple weeks and 160 first full month. But in the past it took a couple months to get to 140s. Don’t rush it. There’s a long runway there. Use the time to get to know your new colleagues.

Took 4 months to get to 160 and above as a second year

In the same boat! The downtime is nice but also a little stressful? I’ve just been trying to meet everyone, let them know I’m available and catch up on CLEs…

I recently lateraled as a mid level and it went something like 100 month 1 -> 140ish month 2 -> 200 month 3 lol.

Most billable hours in a day (within 24 hours)? Mine has been 20 and I’ve hit that 2x this year.

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

Did the billable hours bonus not get paid out today? Or is it to be paid in the next check?

I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

Class of 2019. Missed my billable goal for bonus by literally 8 hours. However, I brought in $20k worth of business, got excellent reviews across the board in my Evals, and fully comply with the firms RTO policy (which they’ve been stressing hard.) however, despite all that I didn’t get any bonus. Should I be more pissed than I am?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

Is it just me or the average billable work in infrastructure transactions has blown off steam in the last couple of weeks?

I started at a new firm this year in January. I had a billable goal that was given to me mid year of around 1750 house for the year. I am nowhere near that and definitely will not meet the goal. I had so many non billable hours I was forced to take when I first came in. I worked my ass off in busy season. At my previous firm I never fell short of hours as it was B4. This firm is mid sized and more focused on WLB. My question is how bad do you think this will affect my comp??

I started my first in-house role about 4 months ago and I don’t think it’s the right fit. I love the no billable hours aspect, but otherwise I miss the structure of being at a firm. How long do you think I should try to stick this out before I move on? I want to give the job a real shot - and i know the transition to in-house can be jarring…but I also don’t want to spend too much time in a job that is a wrong fit.

Is 180 billable hours per month a high “target” (to use the firm’s vernacular) or expectation?Although it may not be unreasonably high, I believe it is a high number and would at least appreciate someone at my firm acknowledging that. Perhaps I’m wrong and I’m sure you’ll tell me if so.

I work small (tiny) law. I make mid-100s, so not great salary, but my firm is so laid back. If I bill 1000 hours, that's fine (we were a remote firm before COVID made it cool). Compared to all my peers getting crushed under 1800+ billable requirements, I've got severe imposter's syndrome. Did I do something right or have I set myself up for failure by avoiding the pressure cooker? (I was at a firm for 2 years that was 1800+.) Curious as to thoughts/experiences.

Was looking for some feedback on a work situation I'm currently in.

I understand it's consulting work but:
- I've had very little actually billable work to do for over 3 months.
- There is ongoing pressure on the content of timesheets despite the lack of work
- When there is work, it's always underquoted for time, so it always requires out of hours work
- When I tell my bosses I have nothing to do they will often be over 24 hours in responding.

Is it time to cut my losses here and move on?
