Don Draper was pretty psyched about his dumb Clio.
The Clio Awards are interesting. They are the best known show, yet they seem to be the least respected in the industry. (Speculation, years ago, was that the number of entries by an agency figured into the Clio judging process.) I’m not sure how people feel about them now.
When I was starting out in NYC, many of the top creative shops only entered the Ad Club and One Show Awards.
(I still jumped at the chance to be a Clio Award Show Judge for radio. It seemed legitimate to me; we had no idea who wrote anything. Plus, I had a blast meeting writers from other agencies and listening to great creative for a week. Fun time.)
Since the mid 80’s. Took a dip in the early 90’s has expanded greatly since the the mid nineties. Yes, it’s not going to stop.
What I wanna know is when did the awards become mostly fake work? Like, when did it stop being for real clients and national / global work, or work that made a dent in the public consciousness, And instead become one off, pro Bono, agency paid for the media buy type stuff?
And even when it’s real work, it’s usually stuff that’s industry famous. If it’s good industry PR that passes for sure. Doesn’t have to make a big splash with real people.
It’s actually less bad than it used to be. Which might be hard to believe, but it’s true.
This 1988 NYT article about ad agencies obsession with winning awards is funny https://www.nytimes.com/1988/06/06/business/the-media-business-ad-agencies-obsession-with-winning-awards.html
I’ve been in this industry since 2002 and it’s always been awards obsessed.
Yeah…not sure I understand this question. How long had a self obsessed industry been self obsessed? Since the early days…
First Cannes Lion awards show was in the mid 50’s. So yeah, agencies have always been obsessed.
Rising Star
This is from 1991, so.... A while.
It's sickening to be honest. We're no longer trying to be creative for creative's sake. Instead, it's just a "crabs in barrel" type of industry
BBDO is solely focused on awards. There are other agencies that aren’t that way. But creatives careers can depend on awards for advancement/financial gain. Results may vary.
Awards bring in clients…
A client I work on literally said, “go win every award”.
