How long is the typical equity partnership track? I used to think it was 8 years, but now it seems longer. Secondly, is it realistic to expect partnership if you’re willing to put in the work/years?

I think at most firms, equity partnership is based less on time served and more on revenue generated.

likehelpful

That makes sense. I underestimated the importance of business development for senior associates.

It’s still about 8 years at my firm, but if the numbers aren’t there then it’ll be longer

likehelpful

Both, but revenue more importantly

Yeah 7-8 here.

Yes. That's considered normal around here. Seems crazy early. But has made a weird dynamic because people will come work at my firm, see all their classmates make partner when they're literally only halfway there, and then jump ship. Our total compensation is still more, but the independence and reduced workload of partners at those smaller firms is still quite tempting.

like

It is interesting. I should note we're the only AmLaw100 firm in our state (by far). I think those who jump ship are short-sighted. They probably get offered that independence, and maybe even a higher salary, right off the bat just 4 years in--and want to take it because they don't want to keep slogging away as lowly associates while all their classmates "make partner." But our potential for compensation as partner becomes exponentially more than anyone will ever make at any of the other firms in town.

like

In BigLaw. Income partner anytime after 7 years, typical range is 8-10. Equity partner at least 3-5 years after that.

helpful

Thank you!

Our firm is 8 years, pretty much as a matter of course. My office though is in one of the smaller markets, and all the big (non-national) firms in town have 4-5 year partnership tracks. Makes for a weird mix.

Wait, so these local/regional firms promote associates to partner after 4-5 years?

I don’t belong in my job. I didn’t mind it when I joined in January and was interacting but as we’ve been work from home longer, the less motivation I have. I don’t enjoy the work but I’ve gotten unlucky with my teams too, and can’t remember the last time my manager praised me without a critique. Maybe I’m just bad at my job. At this point I just am doing the bare minimum to not get fired. What do I do? Should I look for a job that I actually would enjoy doing or stick it out?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time
