Agree...he needs to level with manager on expectations

likefunny

His manager is definitely toxic, unless these expectations were set early on during/before onboarding.

Sounds like a PIP waiting to happen. Sorry OP. Perhaps the feedback delivery is poor however there is clearly a need for improvement.

I’ll hit 2 years in September but I perform well for the work I do. However, I have super high imposter syndrome. He really just needs more of an understanding manager who understands his skill-set a lot better and assists him with training through code academy, coursera, datacamp, and others

Bad luck. Your brother fresh out of school?

Is this an entry level role? If so maybe your brother doesn’t have the proper support and the company isn’t in the position to hire entry level? Could also be the case that your brother isn’t asking the right questions up front, setting expectations before starting a task, keeping their manager informed on progress or asking for help when getting stuck. This is really common for new technical staff like engineers/data scientists, they take something on and managers don’t have visibility into progress until they deliver it. Often times work is done incorrectly and/or too slow.

I’m in a data scientist position and within the last couple years joined an industry I was unfamiliar with. Honestly it took me probably 6 months - 1 year to understand the different data sources and the ins and outs of each. I don’t know how complex the data or his pulls are, but if it’s simple then 2 months shouldn’t be unreasonable for this part of the job. If it’s something more complex, not well documented, and there’s a bunch of caveats that need to be understood, then 2 months does seem a bit quick. Either the manager needs to train/communicate better and/or your brother should be asking more questions to the manager or teammates. Is he missing deadlines or is this a scenario where deadlines aren’t really set? It could also be a disconnect in the sense of urgency on certain tasks too, and your brother and his manager just need to come to a mutual understanding of what the expectations are.

Different expectations per experience level but usually find 6 months to really get into it. 8 months with WFH since in my experience ramp up is slower.

I had a manager like that in my first job! He wanted a more senior resource and was pissed they gave him me, then he didn’t want to modify expectations. You brother needs to do whatever it takes to move teams or leave. Manager will just criticize everything an he’ll get a shot rating

Could you provide more insight on the situation? Age, experience, role, etc? First off his manager’s comment is totally inappropriate especially if its in a larger team meeting. however, if by 2 months you should have a pretty decent handle on things. For most entry / lower level analyst roles

To answer a few common questions that came up here: He’s about a year out of grad school, spent some time as a contractor before his current role as a salaried employee. It’s an entry level position He shadowed the person who had the job previously for 2-3 days and that was the extent of his training I don’t know all the details, but it sounds like his job is split between pulling data for the sales team and working on longer term projects like building dashboards and models and such. He hits the deadlines for the longer term projects, but the sales team seems to think he doesn’t turn around their requests fast enough. He says it’s because he’s still getting used to their system, so he has to spend time finding the right database and then writing the right query.

Also dont be afraid to borrow the same query - most people want the same thing but a different date or a different summary. So save them and use them again so you can just throw a different date in and get a new report ASAP!
