12 litigation cases, with varying degrees of activity due to court closures, continuances, etc.

Follow up: what is your normal (non-covid) number of cases?

I have 13 (in various stages and are not that complex)

I would normally have a few more of the less complex cases. But my number of more complex cases has pretty much stayed the same. The less complex cases are usually state court cases, and the state has suspended all legal deadlines in state courts (including statute of limitations), so not many new state court cases coming in. My more complex fed court cases remain the same. So I’d say that I’d normally have about 15-16 active cases in litigation, but I have 12 now.

21. Normally 25-30. Litigation.

is anyone familiar with pay differentials, negotiating for a temporary raise, or some other compensation for extra work? 3 coworkers on my team have recently resigned, and certain shifts are being expected to work at half staff until new hires can be brought on. if my workload is being doubled, i expect to be compensated, as they are paying one employee to do the work of two. any suggestions on wording for how to address this?

How would you do? Has anyone successfully claimed that income from a NY big law firm is not NY income based on TSB-M-06(5)I (May 15, 2006)? I think that my situation meets all the factors necessary. I’m currently a third year litigation associate in BL that will not hit the bonus this year due to a slow first half. Most of my hours are coming from two larger matters, and its been difficult to get staffed on new cases when those are slow. I’m contemplating a lateral move bc I am stuck/typecast on one or two matters and want to pursue a broader practice, and am not getting enough hours for good reviews/bonus/job security. Struggling with decision because I like my current firm. Any thoughts?

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?

Opinions welcomed:

V5 Legal Assistant here (2 years in industry, started at current firm in late April). I’m on pace for 2700 billable hours / year. To boot, that rate is going up because of all of the 65+ hour weeks lately, and the first month being billed around 40.

I was just told that I may not qualify for any bonuses because I haven’t been here for 1 year.

Is this normal? Am I crazy for thinking that I should be getting a *significant* bonus for all of the crazy hours and deadlines?
