I have several strung out over 20 years because I like to keep my mind open to new perspectives — my skills fresh and relevant. However, I was rejected by a hiring manager who scrolled to the bottom of my LinkedIn page and saw them. She said “since you have relevant corporate design experience why do you have these certifications?” She them mumbled… “makes me think you aren’t that good.” As I look back it was one of the best rejections ever. Steered me into a much better opportunity.

When it comes to interviewing, you can never have too many. when it comes to reality and actually getting work done, having a focus is better than being scattered all over the place.

I don’t care how many certifications you have or don’t, but if you do have any and you put them in your headline on LinkedIn, or prominently on your resume, or your email signature, then I immediately think you are someone who is good at school/tests but totally useless at work.

to add on, it doesn’t matter how many certs one has if one’s people and communication skills are lackluster AND if one doesn’t actually know how to execute the role on a day to day basis. the cert is 100% meaningless otherwise.

Focus on building your soft skills.

No just kidding; thought it would be a great chain of ones. I think once you pass 6 or 7 (technical) certifications, it distracts more than it adds.

Certainly are good to switch fields or if your job requires one. It’s so pointless to collect them

I have over thirty — but I’m a trainer. I think multiple certifications can show progression and mastery of certain domains — for Azure, AZ900 - AZ204 - AZ400 Shows development and devops skills add AZ300/304 for architecture and an SC300 or AZ500 for IAM and you’re looking at a half dozen certs — for just one cloud vendor in just one domain of mastery.

There's never too many. ROI definitely diminishes after the first couple though.

Depends on expectations in your field. Some fields are certifications-heavy and might even require some (e.g Cisco Admin or some security expertise), some fields it's entirely meaningless, thinking software engineering

Hey. Rude. I still want my SE PE, but there are never any PEs at startups to train under, just feels like a catch22 certificate🤦‍♂️

No.

And the real one: when you become so overqualified that you have to actively start hiding them to get hired bc companies expect you to ask for to much money. Varies by level/xp/field probably.

Depends on your role, deep technical should only have a few specific. Broader roles will have a stack of fundamentals.

Short answer is more certifications than you need to legally do your job, or the job you aspire to do.

Certifications are sometimes confused for knowledge, when what they really are is shorthand for employers to determine if you are capable of doing the intended job with the rigor the certification promises.
Project Management wasn't invented by the PMP, and I know plenty of excellent project managers who don't have PMP certifications. But in heavily PM based organizations, they'll need one or they can't work there.

Valuable certifications usually cost time and money to obtain and maintain, so you have to make sure to treat them as investments, unless it just fills you with a sense of pride to own a ton of them.

EY I got an offer: 140K & no bonus for the Manager, Architect (Remote - Medium COL) in Audit (Not Consulting). Looks like that is the best they could do. Based on my research by going through the levels and glassdoor, I was expecting in 160K -180K Range. Do you think my research numbers are off? Is that offer reasonable? or lowball given the current market? Please suggest. Thank you. Deloitte KPMG
