How many client billable hours (excluding probono etc) are you supposed to be billing per month not to be fired? I range anywhere from 130 to 200 hours depending on the month.

When I was on the verge of quitting/getting fired, I billed between 30-50 hours for 6 months without anyone saying anything until month 7.

That’s one of the things I have heard and keep going myself, people monitor/think about you way less than you think they do

I’ve billed like 25 this month but I’m 99% sure I’m going to lateral. Turning down work still.

No one is firing you lol

Monthly is meaningless it’s all about that annual. Granted, I did have a partner make a comment “oh she must be looking to lateral cause she only billed 10 hours lat month.”

like

Is that a typo for 100? lol! To answer the question, yes, it's all about your annual numbers. If your firm gets hung up on monthly or weekly billing you're being micromanaged.

like

No she only billed 10 haha. And yes she did lateral

You won’t get fired. You just need to keep in mind whether your are not busy at a time when everyone else in the team is also not so busy. If everyone is slammed and you’re the only one not busy for an extended period of time, you have to ask yourself why you are not being given more work (assuming you asked for more).

I’ve never heard of anyone checking in on monthly hours. They just look at your year end hours, usually during you annual review. I don’t even care what I bill in any given month. I just look at where I am compared to where I should be to hit my annual goal

Take your yearly billable requirement and divide it by 12. But also, if you’re way ahead from earlier months where you’re still on track for 2k per year (or whatever you need to hit), no problem with a few months at 130.

Anybody switched from plaintiff to defense later in their career? If so, which did you prefer? Also, I’ve done plaintiff work my entire career - outside of billable hours, in your experience what are some frustrations/challenges that are unique to the defense side? I’m a 10 year attorney looking at some defense jobs right now and they seem a lot more stable with more upward mobility than anything I’ve experienced at a plaintiff firm. Thanks in advance for any comments offered.

Imagine for a moment that all strategic consulting firms in the region would have consultants work no later than 9pm. Do you think the quality of the output would decrease? Or maybe the pricing the client is willing to pay would be lower? Or perhaps nothing would happen? I am thinking whether we work long hours because it’s by now part of work approach and culture or because we need to. (Personal experience: in London for my same firm I used to work much less and the output was great…)

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game? I don’t want to sound self-righteous but if most are lying just to make the requirement, then maybe the requirement should be lower.

I am almost 2 years into my H1B. They haven’t started my I140 but when I joined told me that I would be eligible in a year of which I am coming up on in this Oct. I got a new offer today but they told me that they would apply I140 after a year from when I join. The pros of the new one is TC more than 18k with sign-on of 15k (not sure clauses for this) and better wrk-life bal). My question is, how long into H1B is it advisable to have an I140 applied for. Would 3-4 years into my H1B be too late?
