As long as you let them know in advance, I typically like to give at least a few weeks notice if I take off more than a few days. Or I just give at least a couple days notice if it's only one day. Your PTO should be factored in to any contract with the client. Please take of your PTO! You don't have to justify it, you're entitled to it.

Take your vacation. Truth is you are not that important and if you truly are so important that you can’t take a week off then you are severely undervalued as I have never worked with someone where we wouldn’t be able to survive without them there a week. I just took a week off and the other director took a week after that. Ensure time to do hand offs and discuss who is taking what. Do what you can before hand to minimize the impact if you can the week before like closing things out so they don’t have to cover ongoing open items. But things will come up. If you don’t have anything planned yet and don’t have a specific date you care to take off then you can minimize the impact more by reviewing the project plan and plan for the least impactful week. AGAIN USE YOUR VACATION. P.s. this is a benefit and part of your total compensation so by not using it you are essentially handing money back. Would you hand back the part of a bonus you don’t spend? No you put it in savings.

I often take 2 days during a project. As long as it’s communicated as early as possible/there’s a week’s notice at minimum for more than 1 day my team has always been fine with it.

I take a full week during projects! You’re entitled to your vacation time! And the project should be scoped such that people are able to take vacation— it’s meant to be factored in.

I just took 2 full weeks. Planned ahead, had someone backfill for any unforeseen client requests. I am on a three year implementation project - it doesn’t serve anyone to burn out early.

I’ve been having a hard time during the pandemic WFH. I’ve been diagnosed with major depression & anxiety. I don’t interact much with others for work and have been able to keep this to myself. We have yr end reviews coming up. I know it will be a bad one for me. I’ve invested in 2x/week therapy (at a financial loss) to improve my health. I’m feeling better. Is there anything that a staff could do/say at reviews that would cause you to give them a 2nd chance? I love it here and want to improve.

Down because I got some upsetting (work-related) news yesterday. I was up for promotion and did not get it, basically for my actual job that I have been acting in for over a year. I had perfect reviews and perfect on the technical portion of the interview. Apparently they dinged me on something subjective relating to situational competencies. Colleagues—who I trained and mentored—did receive promotion and we will all be working at the same job, just them at higher level and pay. Contd.
