Im working 50h average for 270 (incl bonus) and 200 base. That’s net working time, not travel, lunch, etc. so I guess that’s what I can get now. But when I was more junior I worked 65h for 68k (first job in 2008).

As many hours as it takes to generate equivalent value. Some weeks that is 40, others 80. I don’t sell time, I sell value.

@M4 Unless you are self-employed or part owner, your viewpoint is bizarre. Value based pricing/selling is one thing, but once you start talking salary the way the client is charged becomes moot. If I do freelance/independent contractor work, I look for opportunities to sell the value of my work so I can get paid more for less. Is it your view that you are generating the value of the cost of your employment each week? That’s not really an appropriate framework for career management in consulting as it’s overly transactional and absent of strategic decisions. I don’t really view it as how many hours I’d work for 200k. I decide how many hours I’m comfortable working and then continue to try to increase the return on that investment. In my case, I’m happy to work 60 hrs/week. Less and I feel idle, more and I feel tired. Don’t mind being flexible on that as long as it flexes in both directions.

Well I’m already working 50-60 before travel for less than half of that sooooo

No more than 50. I focus on bringing value and I can’t do that if I’m burned out.

If I don’t really need the job - answer is 0 to 10 If I will be on the street if I get fired - answer is 120 If I don’t know anything useful but feel I can get another job easily - probably 80 If I am an SM on fast track to make partner - probably 100 You get the drift - nearly impossible to have a generic answer

10. So I can find a 40 hr/wk job to make up the the other 200k.

200k I would not work more than 40 hours, this is why I am going to leave. What we work now (65h plus) I would need to get min 300-350k to continue working like that.

I’m working 40 hours for 150. For 200, I’m willing to go to 41.5

Interviewing for a great position in industry (tech). They have equity comp & great benefits. Spoke to their HR, then interviewed with 2 people in the tax department and am getting scheduled for a next round of interviews. The only problem is: the office is about 1 hr from my house (I own). They said repeatedly that they want someone who will be in the office 5 days a week. I would actually move but can’t rent out my place now due to some repairs going on that will take 4-5 months. Thoughts?

Anyone else feel like their actual work is very disconnected from their paycheck? If I do a great job and create a ton of value for the client I’ll get a maximum of a 15% TC increase YOY (much less due to covid). Similarly if I do the absolute minimum it’s really hard to be fired since I’m in a hot market and they can’t decrease my TC without cutting my base pay (which I’m 99% sure they won’t do). And my raise/bonus won’t even necessarily be indicative of my performance anyways.
