Y'all old school. Two years is very average per agency. So that's three in five years...
More than 3 in a row under 6 months
Ask them! They might’ve been made redundant through a merger; an account might’ve been lost; a better opportunity might’ve popped up. Ask.
People (especially young ones) can make mistakes as they learn about themselves and the industry. My first job lasted 2 years, I took a new job because I was offered double my salary and only lasted 6 months because I was being sexually harassed by my supervisor, then because I was in a rush to get out of the last situation I ended up at an agency that didn’t align with my skill set (I just took the job because I liked the people). So then I left that agency after only 6 months. So to sum it up, I had 3 jobs in 3 years or 2 jobs in 1 year. Either way, I knew that looked bad on paper. But in that process I learned a lot about the environment I needed and the type of agency I needed to work at to excel.
Next month will be my 4 year anniversary at my current agency. I’m thankful they didn’t over analyze how many jobs I had before they hired me.
I think it’s interesting that you only want to hear from people in the first ten years of their career. Do you think they are the ones doing all the hiring?
Sometimes. What I am trying to assess is if older generations have a different standard. I would have said less than a year in a job and numerous stints like that are a problem but I’m 40 plus. I’m curious what younger hiring managers think
3 jobs in 5 years is a flag for sure. Not sure how much experience they really got and what is it about their work style that isn’t working.
I wouldn’t look at someone who has more than 6-7 jobs in 5 years.
3 or more in 5 years would be a red flag. I’d def want to hear why

I’m in my first 4 years and have worked at 3 jobs including my internship. I had a 4mo internship. Then took a job for 2ish yrs, now I’m on my 3rd job of 9 mos. I’ve only ever had stellar reviews. And any change in agency was a lifestyle/ city move. I’d say if they’re quick stints at agencies, it’s worth being concerned but the number of jobs shouldn’t necessarily be a huge red flag.
I wouldn’t really count internships. They’re structured to be short term anyway.

I think a good rule of thumb for new-ish folk in the industry is an average of 18 months per position. It’s OK to leave an ill-suited position in six months or less just don’t make it habit of it.
You have to look at the city as well. In NY or LA short stints and jumping around are the norm and almost expected. But if you’re in another market like Minneapolis, if you have three jobs in five years within that city, that would be a red flag.
Does "job changes" include promotions or only count if having left a company to get said new job?
New job in new company is what I was asking about. Promotions are good!
Ask why the short tenures. If there’s a good reason, they’ll be prepared for the question.
Use your brain. Sometimes great people move because they don’t settle.
